Moving to another country with huge dvd collection
So I may be moving to Europe next year and was wondering what I would have to do to be able to watch my Region 1 dvds over there.

Most TVs sold in Eurpoe nowadays are multi format. So they accept PAL/NTSC/SECAM.
So just bring along your dvd player and buy a power converter (220/50hz->110/60hz) and you'll be fine.
If you dvd player isnt't region free, it's probably best to buy a new one, region free, over there. They're easy to find.

Just take your player, I've heard many Pal tvs can also accept NTSC signals. You just need to worry about converting the power. Or just take your DVDs & pony up for a new PAL region free player as fveillette stated.

If you're staying there (and I assume you are), you're better off just buying a new region free player there. Then you can enjoy your existing collection and still be able to buy titles locally as well.

Before I moved to Japan, I sold off all of my Region 1 DVDs
and After I arrived, rebought all of them as Region 2 Japanese versions.
I suggest you do the same thing in Europe too.....

manicsounds, that sounds like a very expensive proposition. Japanese DVDs are usually at least twice as expensive as their region 1 counterparts, and region 1 DVDs don't fetch much in the second-hand marketplace unless they're OOP titles.
I think it'd be much cheaper to just buy a region-free player that does PAL and NTSC.
No sense taking a huge loss on your DVD collection.

Is the move permanent or temporary? That can decide a lot of things, like whether to move stuff over. Like, if it's temporary, you might want to move only the discs in a DVD folder and keep the cases stateside.

Just buy a region free player when you get there, converting power is a pain, DVD players are dirt cheap, it would cost more to ship your player and buy a power converter.
Plus in UK/Europe most players connect via a SCART lead, which US players do not output with.

I kept my region 1 discs and i usually buy discs from regions other than Japan,
just because they are too expensive for the exact same content.
I would say just take whatever you feel is neccessary,
and sell off discs that you really don't feel is much worth it anymore.
If you don't you might consider yourself as a materialist.
I personally sold off about 500 or so albums, cds, and dvds before i moved overseas. But then again, I was still left with over 2000 discs.......
Moving cost a lot of money.....
