My Name Is Earl - Music replaced!

Directly from Greg Garcia at http://blog.nbc.com/earl/:

Music is a big part of the show. We are fortunate that NBC has helped us get great music for the show. When it came to the DVD, we had to painfully pick songs that were best for the episodes. Damn licensing issures with the music in the end so I couldn't use all of them.

That's really surprising to me considering that the eventual DVD release seems to be part of the overall planning now. For older shows, it's disappointing yet almost (!) understandable. For a new show like this, it doesn't make sense.

Earl is a great show and I hope the switching of music doesn't destroy the DVD experience.

I'd like to see a list of what was actually "replaced". The way I read this, it seems like he couldn't use the songs he wanted for the episodes period because of the DVD release, not that anything has been replaced.

Here's a partial list of the missing songs:

"Do The Monkey" by The Wiggles
"Make Me Smile" by Erasure
"Cherry Pie" by Warrant
John Carpenter's "Halloween" theme
"Bad Company" by Bad Company
"Thunderstruck" and "Highway To Hell" by AC/DC
"Hair of the Dog" by Nazareth
"Bad To The Bone" by George Thorogood
"Saturday in the Park" by Chicago
"Electric Avenue" by Eddie Grant
"Higher Ground" by Stevie Wonder
"Fortunate Son" by Creedence Clearwater Revival

These are just the missing songs that someone on the IMDB board has found.

They've basically destroyed the show.

I'm with you then. Unacceptible. And there's no excuse in this day where DVD release is a foregone conclusion.

Wow. The music is a big part of this show.

Sounds like when NBC negotiated music rights, they did it for broadcast only in order to save a few bucks. My guess this was probably before they knew the show would be a runaway hit.

Maybe season 2 will have all the music intact?

That's inexcusable. I was going to buy it this week. Not anymore. I love the show too.

I have watched every episode of the series on original broadcast, and watched the DVDs, and I didn't notice anything severely out of place. They did a nice job of salvaging what could have been a bad situation.

I picked up the set yesterday. This isn't enough for me to return it, but I'm extremely disappointed and surprised. As others have said, I'd expect this for an older series, not for one that started in 2005. They knew they would be releasing it on DVD, yet they CHOSE not to pay a little more for those rights? Pathetic. I guess they figured it was only important when it aired and they're getting advertising dollars, whereas the people who buy the DVDs won't know any better until they've already paid.

I'm curious where the cuts are and what was subbed in.

Though, is it an NBC issue or a FOX issue? FOX is the studio that produces the show.

Another case where I'm sticking with my broadcast recordings. I don't have any interest in edited stuff, especially since the music was important to the show.

Gah. I bought this at Target for the Bonus DVD thinking something like this wouldn't be an issue. I'm severely disappointed now!

This really doesn't bother me (I bought the set, watched about half of it and never noticed a single change) but I suppose it sucks all the same. I'll just echo that with TV on DVD such a hot ticket that it's just plain retarded that they would only negotiate rights for broadcast for anything recent.

That's gross.
Just another reason not to watch any new tv series, or rather a reason not to buy any of them on dvd. You'd be better off in investing in a dvr and some blank media to make your own series, than liking one so much to buy the dvd then finding out it's all altered. Cheap, cheap, cheap.

I never watch any broadcast TV, and get all my shows on dvd, mainly because I hate waiting a week to see another episode.

By doing this, them replacing music usually doesn't affect me one bit.

Nearly every episode I watch of this show as the songs come up I am constantly marvelling at what a fantastic soundtrack the show has. While except in unusual circumstances I may not notice the specific changes, I probably would wonder why I used to think that when watching the original broadcasts.

Man, that's horrible. I can easily recall some of the scenes that used the songs from that IMDB list. As a matter of fact, it is now impossible for me to hear "Electric Avenue" by Eddie Grant and not think of Joy getting tasered.

Very disappointing.
