What do you use to keep your dvd collection and house clean and dust free?
For the past few years I have had a terrible time keeping dust and other stuff off of my dvd collection and out of my house. Using towels and swiffers would only bandaid the realproblem for about a day or two. This past week I went ahead and purchased a Fairfax hoping that it will help me keep my collection clean and the dust off my dvds and everything else. I was curious to see what the rest of you guys and gals do to keep your collections looking sharp as well as organized.

I live in the country and dust is just part of life here, so every once in a while I go through and do a heavy dusting. I have air cleaners, hepa filters on the house and all that, but I still get dust from the country roads, fields, woods and farms. Hate it, but I like having the wondows and doors open. So it's fresh air and dust, or stale air and little dust. In the winter it's bad from the fireplace but that's life.

I clean all my dvds thoroughly 2x a year and dust the shelves and tops often. Some of mine are behind glass so they aren't much of a problem. I do have a Golden Retriever, so its worse in the summer.

Personally I transfer my collection to a secure facility twice a year, place them in a vacuum where they are microwaved to kill all bacteria, then disinfected, and coated with a space shuttle grade protective varnish.
When they are returned home, they are placed in an air-tight shelf, where they can be admired. But only under dim lighting so as not to fade the covers.

I came across this place http://www.bagsunlimited.com/cart/browse.asp?subcat=246 but have yet to try them out. Prices don't seem too ridiculous.

I've accepted dust as an unavoidable presence. Between having 2 cats (lots of pet dander & hair) and living in a subdivision where my backyard looks across the street at a General Motors factory, I have all sorts of dust problems.

I never understood the concept of "dusting": it simply moves the dust around.
I go with the theory (as originally expounded by Quentin Crisp) that you must not loose your nerve - after the first two years, the dust won't get any worse.

Then...if that fails....I trust my individual sleeves that I have each dvd in. So, my dvd cases are never dusty or dirty. I use a dustbrush to hit the shelves once a week. I also keep my audio/video gear under plastic cover when not in use. Seems insane....but dust on my collection or gear just does not happen. I hate dust on that kind of stuff. Thats the simple solution....but the question is....do you wish to make the effort as I have done.
And it's cheap. Not sure what they run now, but I bought my case sleeves in bulk at about 3 cents a piece. I still have an extra 4 or 500 on hand...just waiting for new additions to enter my library.

Well, I started by moving my entire DVD collection to an empty bedroom in my much less dusty grandmother's house (with her consent of course) up the road. I then purchased a Roomba robotic vac that is automatically set to run twice a week in the newly dubbed DVD Room. There's also an ionic air purifier set-up that runs 24/7 to help combat the dust. And finally, I occasionally run a Swiffer type duster over the shelves occasionally.
The only downfall is I have to drive to her house and transport them back and forth in a plastic container. But, this is only temporary as I'm having new carpet installed where the DVD shelves stand. After that, I'll take the exact same measures...only at my place.
