DVD Talk review of 'Tromeo and Juliet: 10th Anniversary Collector's Edition'

On the question of the aspect ratio of this flick. Lloyd Kaufman's movies are shot open-matte Academy ratio, which is then cropped in projection to 1.85 in movie theaters. The video transfers match the shooting ratio.
The laserdisc version of TROMEO that came out years ago was 1.85, but it was just a cropped version of the original image (and the colors on the transfer itself were terrible).
The only real plus I've been able to find with the 1.85 is in the sex scene with "Rosie," where they are doing it doggystyle. In full-frame, you can see the woman's flesh-colored panties and it sort of blows the whole suspension-of-disbelief thing, while in 1.85, you can't see them. But really, who honestly believed they were actually having sex?
Also, this 2-disc is great. Probably one of the 3 best DVD treatments Troma has given to one of their movies (next to the 2-disc TERROR FIRMER and CITIZEN TOXIE sets).

The colors look a little less drab to my eyes, but I think that it is probably just a slightly different encode of the same master.
The main reason to get this is for the extras. Bill Gibron didn't lie -- counting the 4 commentaries, including about 2 hours of interviews with cast and crew, and then all the other random archival and fun stuff, it's like nearly 11 hours of bonuses.
Definitely requires more than one sitting to sift through. And so far, it seems to be worth the time.

The original aspect ratio for Tromeo & Juliet, as well as every film directed by Lloyd Kaufman and/or Michael Herz, right up to and including Poultrygeist! is 1.33:1.
