Christopher Nolan to direct The Prisoner

http://www.darkhorizons.com/news06/060811f.php

Universal Pictures is near a deal for Christopher Nolan ("Batman Begins", "Memento") to direct a feature version of TV series classic "The Prisoner" reports Variety.

Janet and David Peoples ("Twelve Monkeys", "Blade Runner", "Unforgiven") are set to write the script based on the series, which lasted only 17 episodes in 1967. Despite its short length, it has developed a huge cult following in the subsequent near four decades its been off air.

Patrick McGoohan played a government agent who resigns, is kidnapped and placed on an isolated island known as the Village. He's given a new identity -- Number Six -- and interacts with an island staff trying to get him to reveal why he resigned.

Plan is for Nolan to direct a contemporized transformation after he completes work "The Dark Knight," the "Batman Begins" sequel that begins production early next year at Warner Bros. Pictures. Nolan's next film, "The Prestige", hits theatres in October.

I thought they had settled on a new tv miniseries with Christopher Eccleston starring.

I wonder if they're aiming for a single movie or trying to do a trilogy thing.

Should be interesting... and the casting of Number 6 is key. The image of Patrick McGoohan is so etched in my mind.

I'm not a huge fan of his, but I can somehow see Ewan McGregor in the role of No. 6.

Definitely looking forward to this.

MAI-DEN!!!!

Smith/Harris

On the run kill to eat
You're starving now you're dead on your feet
Going all the way nature's beast
Do what I want as I please

Run fight to breathe it's tough
Now you see me now you don't
Break the walls I'm coming out

Not a prisoner I'm a free man
And my blood is my own now
Don't care where the past was
I know where I'm going ... out

If you kill me it's self defence
If I kill you then I call it vengeance
Spit in your eye I will defy
You'll be afraid when I call out your name

I'm not a number I'm a free man
I'll live my life how I want to
You'd better scratch me from your black book
Cos I'll run rings round you

I've never seen The Prisoner, but if Nolan is doing this, I'm there.

For some reason I think Gary Oldman or Hugo Weaving would make a fantastic number 6.

I would like to see McGoohan play some part in the movie, perhaps number 2?

ALBANY

They Might Be Giants

The Egg, exciting and old
The Egg, you'll do what you're told
The Egg, the Egg, no corners for you

The Egg, permission to land
The Egg, where should I stand?
The Egg, the Egg, no corners for you

Poured concrete flowing into organic shapes
Carpet, wood trim, and some velvet drapes
Combine to make one perfect place

From the outside I am thinking
I'm a number, not a man

From the outside I am thinking
What were they thinking?

The Egg, when will it hatch?
The Egg, please leave off the latch
The Egg, the Egg, no corners for you
No corners for you
No corners for you

Chris Nolan is my favorite director, so I'm there regardless...but I wish he'd pump out more original screenplays as opposed to half original work, half adaptations.

Wasn't Memento based on his brother's short story?

McGoohan as Number 2 would be inspired casting. Although I'm not sure what kind of health he's in these days - the last movie I saw him in was Braveheart.

Which leads me to this: Mel Gibson was once interested in both directing and starring in a PRISONER movie. Too bad he's "on the outs," beacuse he'd have made a good No. 6.

As long as they keep the lead a non-American, I'll be happy. I don't want to see Keanu Reeves.

I've always thought Sam Neill would make a good No. 6...may be slightly too old for the part now.

Is this "Prisoner" show the basis for the Simpsons episode where the family gets gassed and sent to the island.

"Why did you think a big balloon would stop him?"
"Shut up. That's why!"

it would be great if it was actually a true "sequel" to the original. It would be so perfect if it wasn't a remake, but a continuing of the themes of the original with McGoohan in charage of it all playing the same character he played in the series. To people that didn't see the original show, it would easy to make it stand on it's own too.

Will Smith is already f*ing up I Am Legend so that should limit him from inducing mediocrity into this production. Nothing against Will but if it's a really serious piece he just doesn't work in it, IMO. Bale would be a fine choice, as would Ewan McGregor.

IMO they should not even attempt to find anyone to fill McGoohan's shoes. That's like trying to find someone beside Peter Sellers to play Inspector Clouseau. This movie would do better to expand on the series with a completely new character and throw McGoohan in there as well.
Spoiler:
He is Number One after all

DUDE, IT WAS A JOKE. There's nothing behind what I said about Will Smith.
