R1 DVD release of How I Met Your Mother - Season 1 is going to be Full Frame :(
These are the details according to tvshowsondvd.com:
Fox has announced the first season of How I Met Your Mother for release on November 21. The 3 disc set will include all 22 episodes (484 mins) from the first season, along with commentary, a Video Yearbook, and a gag reel. The show will be presented in Full Frame (1.33:1), along with English Dolby Digital 5.1 audio, Spanish Dolby Surround audio, and subtitles in Spanish and French. The set will sell for $39.98 US, or $54.98 CAN.

After watching the entire series in 16:9 WS HD, there is no way I'm going to buy some full frame hack job! If anyone knows of any petitions that have already been started, or knows where we can write to to get this changed, please let me know.
Otherwise, I am keeping my money and holding out hope for a "proper" 1.78:1 anamorphic release in another region.

WHAT!?!?! Fox is usually really good at getting aspect ratios right, so I'm hoping this is a misprint of some kind, otherwise, I'll skip it as well.

Bones season 2 premieres on Wednesday August 30th so that DVD release will be late as well.

Yep, no way I'll buy this or any other recent 16:9 HD broadcast show in full frame. What are the studios thinking? Oh, that's right, they're trying to make a quick buck with as little effort as possible assuming their customers don't care and will buy it anyway.

Im Very disappointed in this news too....this was one show I was really looking forward to buying on DVD. I didnt expect FOX to screw the pooch on this one. I have all of the episodes downloaded in 16:9 too, but they are inconsitent on quality (most are the half res releases, the rest are the low quality ones). I hadnt even burned them yet hoping a decent quality DVD was coming out....how do we get in touch with FOX to let them know how displeased we are with this?

Many others like this:
House - Produced by Universal, broadcast on Fox
My Name is Earl - Produced by Fox, broadcast by NBC
etc. etc.

I've emailed Gord Lacey of tvshowsondvd.com and he's gonna check with FOX today to see if this is just a mistake. I'll post here when I hear anything back, or I suspect there will be an update on tvshowsondvd.com if it will be in 1.78:1 anamorphic WS.

Sitcoms like this are usually composed for the 4:3 safe area with a lot of dead space on the sides for the 16:9 HD broadcasts. I don't think this is necessarily a travesty. It may be what the producers prefer. I've watched shows like Raymond, Frasier, and George Lopez in HD and they tend to look awkward in 16:9. All the actors are crammed into the middle of the frame, and the sides are left wide open.
Dramas tend to be better composed for the wider frame in most cases (except perhaps Gilmore Girls).

Thanks Fox, you just saved me 25-30 bucks!
Sorry, but as a 16x9 HDTV owner who watches the HD versions of all network programs, I expect anamorphic widescreen DVDs....
I passed on "Life As We Know It" due to its 4:3 release, I passed on "Joey" due to its 4:3 release, and now I will pass on this one...
I expected better from Fox, I mean, they got "My Name Is Earl" right, so why not this one?
(I am using "Earl" as another half-hour comedy broadcast in 16x9 HD as a comparison....)

I discovered this show after 19 or so episodes had aired. I downloaded the first 19 and watched them all in the space of a week. I was (past tense) looking forward to this DVD release. Not any more.

That's too bad. I just discovered this show about a month ago and think it's great (and have been enjoying it in HD). I would have definitely bought the set, but now I'm really gonna have to think about it.
