Just saw "Mercy Reef" (a.k.a. Aquaman)...
First off I gotta say they did a great job with a fairly lame character. I mean growing up I was a big superhero fan. I loved The Superfriends and "accepted" Aquaman...but he was a pretty damn boring character.
That said....
This show was pretty damn good!!!
Selling points:
1) monsters - (the Sirens are like vampires)
2) eye candy - (like every young adult oriented show...everyone is "model" material)
3) hip music - (hell...I alot of the music I listen to now, I got turned onto from Smallville).
4) likable characters (come on...Ving Rhames...how much more likable do you get than that!!!)
The problem is...the new "CW" network didn't pick it up.
I don't understand why reality television thrives like weeds in an unkept garden, but fun, sci-fi-fantasy shows like this (as well as Surface, Smallvile, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) are ridiculed and thought of as stupid.
The networks don't realize that there's a market out there for this stuff. Not everyone cares about "reality tv".
I say "Mercy Reef" should be allowed to find its audience as Buffy and Charmed did. The world loves superheroes and as much as he''s a crappy character, Aquaman should be given a chance.
