Revolutionary war movies?
The other night at work, I was talking to a friend about movies in general. He said that war movies were his favorite genre, so I asked him for some suggestions on movies based on the Revolutionary war. I know of The Patriot with Mel Gibson, but that's it. He was drawing a blank also. I was wondering if anyone else knew on any. Also, why does there seem to be so few of them when compared to movies based on other wars?
Thanks in advance

BARRY LYNDON is of the era and, while not specifically about the Revolutionary War, does feature a goodly amount of battle footage from Seven Years War.

DVD Talk Legend
one of the best ever: Drums Along the Mohawk directed by John Ford and starring Henry Fonda - beautiful to look at and a great film.
Revolution starring Al Pacino is unknown for a very good reason...it sucks.
One ahead of its time pre-revolutionary film is Northwest Passage - which stars Spencer Tracy as Major Robert Rogers leading "Rogers Rangers" through the New England Wilderness during the French and Indian War. It has a surprisingly frank scene of an actual massacre of an Abenaki village in it. This isn't on DVD sadly, but TCM shows it from time to time - it was just on a few days ago again....
But yes...for some reason, the Revolution doesn't get the attention it deserves from Hollywood. As much as it has been whitewashed in our history books, the war was extremely brutal and opportunities abound for compelling films. I think it's just a matter of people not caring much anymore, and preferring to remember the war as one fought by men in white wigs on soapboxes, rather than Hessian mercenaries and American guerrilas.
