M. Night Shyamalan Directing Harry Potter?

M. Night Syamalan is apparently showing some interest in directing a Harry Potter movie. You will recall his latest film Lady in the Water is now in theatres ( Read our reviews ) He told Coming Soon: "You know, that Harry Potter dance has gone on a long time. The problem is that it is a living breathing thing now, all by itself. When it comes over to my camp, it needs to be kind of handed over, adoption papers and everything. That's a tricky move."

He indicated in his interview that he was offered the first Harry Potter movie but turned it down. Whatcha think, good idea? Bad idea? Hit the boards and sound off.

He's been good with kids movies before....Stuart Little, though I am not sure if he directed them. If he can get his ego put aside and go for the feel of the books, then why not. But Harry Potter really doesn't need him if he's just going to do it to throw his name around some more.

Also, since he seems to have trouble coming up with original ideas of his own, I guess this is a way for him to do it. At least he isn't coming up with his own wizard kid type movie that follows the Harry Potter books but is called something different.

No. it would ruin the series. People would go in expecting to see "a twist".

He'd be fine. The problem is with his writing, not his directing.

Awesome. Because, y'see, when that last wave of Harry Potter trailers hit...all I could think was, "that movie looks good, but fuck I wish this trailer had more whispering in it."

"Shamalamadingdong" wasn't funny the first time someone said it, and it still isn't funny the millionth time.

It's clear from this statement--"When it comes over to my camp, it needs to be kind of handed over, adoption papers and everything"--that the matter of his ego against the antimatter of J. K. Rowling's ego would cancel one another out; therefore, we have nothing to ever worry about. Playing "what if?", though? It's a horrible idea.

Actually, I think this is a good idea. He can cast himself as dobby and we can watch himself smack the hell out of himself for 3 hours. I'd definitley pay to see that.

So what would be so bad about it? Beyond all the "he'd have Harry find out he was dead the whole time after getting wet in the first movie" crap, I mean. His problem is that he can't write a script worth a damn, but he most likely wouldn't be writing the script here so I don't see why that would play into it.

He's a bad writer, but he's a good director. I'm not seeing the problem.

Meh. His style doesn't quite fit with the Harry Potter films.

With his slow as fuck pace the three hour film will still only cover 1/4th of what the other Potter films have covered.
