To be fair, she did receive a Goya nomination and European film Best Actress award for Non ti muovere aka Don't Move, which I'd say was a good movie.

The awards Volver received at Cannes, Best Screenplay and the Best Acress Award was given to all 6 of Almodóvar's leading ladies, mearly wet the appetite. I can't wait for this one.

I also can't wait for this one... to be released on DVD so I can pick it up. It won't be shown on any theaters around me.

This does look good. I didn't like the last two Almodovar movies at all.

Saw this at the NY Film Festival this past weekend - terrific movie, worth all the praise its been getting. The performance by Cruz (who was there for a Q&A afer the screening) is stunning, definitely one deserving of major award consideration.

I saw this trailer when I saw Women On The Verge a few weeks ago, it looks fantastic. I also agree that Cruz does her best in Spanish language films. Vanilla Sky was a disaster as far as I could see. I do have to disagree about Non Ti Mouvere, I thought it lacked a lot, and the main impetus of the film and how her character came to fall in love was repulsive in a film where that didn't really fit as far as I'm concerned.

No question.

I should have been more specific in that it was her performance in Non Ti Mouvere I was impressed with. As far as the film itself, my feelings on it actually closely reflect your own.

"Volver" release dates

Can anyone provide the "Volver" wide release dates? Outside of NY and LA that is. I can't find them anywhere. Thanks in advance.

I just saw this, didn't see any other review threads so will bump this, it was clear early on what the story was about, and in typical Pedro style there are prostitutes, hot chica's disturbed mothers, and tragic loss.

I liked it, and Penelope was great in it, something about those big brown eyes tearing up, but it didn't grab me like todo sobre and educacion.

I will watch it again, and add it to my collection, but something about it was off.

Yeah, I thought Cruz was great in this, but the movie left me a little meh...Didnt think it was a bad movie, but just couldnt really get into it. Maybe because I wasnt a big fan of the story line, but something just didnt quite grab me about it.

I *almost* just saw this. This old tiny Edwards in Costa Mesa was actually closing/closed today cause their lease just ran out? Some guy was handing out free tickets and telling people to go to some theater in Irvine...the films were on their way over. So ok.

I guess I will go later...for free!!

For most of the running time of this film, I didn't quite know what to make of it. Let's just say these women in the film are able to fully able to compartmentalize all sorts of mischief and messy situations. They are resilient and strong, but as the reasons become clear in the end, it's even more impressive. The film does get loose with some subplots that were either underwritten or just cut out of the film for pacing purposes.

Penelope Cruz does deliver a rich, luminous, performance, she's so much better delivering dialogue in Spanish, and Almodovar pushes her emotionally in so many scenes, it's rewarding to watch her performance.

I give it 3 stars or a grade of B.

She's great in this flick. It was like watching a young Sophia Loren at times. Just lights up the screen. Almodovar just keeps on cranking out fascinating movies.

Saw this. I've only seen All About My Mother and Women on the Verge. I've had Talk to Her gathering dust on my shelf for years. His movies are good but they never give me the impulse to watch. This movie is slowly changing my attitude on him. It seems less Almodóvar-y than the others although as BDB mentioned the themes are still there.

I thought it was well done, but I had a major gripe with
Spoiler:
the fact that if Penelope Cruz's daughter is also her sister she should have some major genetic deficiencies... no?

Otherwise, the movie was good and very, very watchable.
