I really wouldn't mind picking this up for the nostalgia. Whenever my kids are watching a Sesame Street DVD and a clip from the 70's comes on I usually recognize and remember it immediately.

I would buy this set in an instant if it contained the holy grail of all Sesame Street skits- the 1989 "Director's Cut" of the Monster in the Mirror with the boatload of celebrity cameos (including Ray Charles and The Simpsons).

I wonder how Sesame workshop intends to format the Seasme Street DVD's, a selection of Complete Episodes (ala the Electric company skits) , or perhaps take that to the next level and do chronological sets (ex. make the first one 1969-1970 so people can see Green Grover and Orange Oscar for the frist time in over 30 years).

Elmo first appeared on Sesame Street in 1979.

A Grover collection would be pretty cool. I still get a kick out of the times he tries to get a kid to say the word "no".

I might have to pick this up as well, but I have always been hoping they would put Sesame Street Unpaved on DVD, which was on Noggin when it first premiered. They had all the classic clips with retrospectives from the original cast. Quite good stuff, and geared towards the older crowd who grew up on the stuff.

I do see they released a book of it...

Fantastic. Any Grover the Waiter skits or Ernie and Bert skits and I will buy this in a flash.

Wasnt he just a "little red monster" in 1979/80?
I also hate the fact that, in the late 90's, it was Elmo's Street
One skit I REALLY want is the one where Ernie plays the drums and Bert has to relay the sounds back to him.
"Ba-dum dum ching, ba-dum ching, bum diddy-da..."



I have both versions of Monster In The Mirror BTW, they did indeed do a "Director's Cut" of it, with celebrities each doing a line, much like "Put Down The Duckie".

He was just a background monster until Kevin Clash took over as the puppeteer for him in 1984. Why Kevin Clash had so much power to dominate the show with Elmo I don't know, but I can only assume it was the huge toy sales of Elmo. If anything I think Elmo has hurt the show over the years especially with things like the awful Blue's Clues rip off they stick on the end. However, it does seem like they have evened the show out more over the past couple of years to make it less Elmo centric.

I have the Sesame Street Unpaved book. One of the first "soap opera" type moments I remember from the 80's (I think) was when Maria announced she was pregnant (she actually was, with her real life daughter Gabriella who took up a role on the show, much like Roscoe Orman's real-life son had the initial role of Miles).

Darkside, I agree that Elmo's World sucked balls It turned the catchy Elmo's Song (La la la la), into a hdeous tune with a kazoo. Another failing with shows over the past few years I think (21st century) has been that the show has the concept of a "storyline" (one show I had on tape was about Ervine's first bath or something, so the whole show had loads of "bath" type sketches/clips in it and nothing else) which sucked compared to Old Sesame Street IMO.

From 1984-1992 (when I grew up with the show) Elmo was all right, from then on he was just an annoying little ass-clown who talks down to kids. According to Elmo's World the way to find out about books is to "watch The Book Channel" - WTF!
His 3rd person talking also pisses me off as well

How did they write that into the show? Did they have Ernie become a man and she had a little orange baby?

I can't say I ever sat down and watched Elmo's World, but I would see bits and pieces of it while flipping channels during the commercial breaks for other shows. Like a train wreck, sometimes I would just have to stop for a minute and look. His talking to Mr. Noodle like he's a born dumbass must really teach kids watching how to respect your elders, especially the way Elmo always talked down to him with his superiority complex. But one particularly disturbing image I saw while turning channels was Elmo was jumping up and down at the same time with Mr. Noodle, and Elmo was standing right in front of Mr. Noodle and his head came up to...well, Mr. Noodle's noodle...and Mr. Noodle had one hand on Elmo's head. Now tell me they didn't know what the hell they were doing when they filmed that scene? Jim Henson should come back from his grave and kick ass.
