Deadwood - "True Colors" - 6/25/06

"True Colors"
Spoiler:
Deadwood ushers in some new arrivals on the stagecoach: Jack Langrishe, a flamboyant stage promoter and old friend of Swearengen, and Aunt Lou Marchbanks, Hearst's longtime cook who settles in nicely as the Grand Central chef. Also returning to town is a newly westernized Wu, with news for "Swegin" about a soon-to-arrive group of imported Hearst workers. Apparently recovered from her ailments, with the aid of a reliable pal, Alma decides to approach Hearst with a claim deal, despite Ellsworth's adamant objections. Bullock uncovers the truth about the Gem killings, and vows to put Hearst on notice. Hearst calls Tolliver's bluff, then offers him a "fresh start."

Spoiler:
Brian Cox joins the cast tonight

Someone else is going to have to start the thread for this and Entourage next week and the week after, I'll be on vacation without cable or the internet

I posted this else where but maybe this is the thread to post.

Is it me or does this season seem stripped down? The town seems smaller and less packed, the cast seems smaller (no Wu yet, where he been?) and the outside seems like a new land. Also, the dialogue seems simpler and less riddle like.

So Cox is playing a gay guy right? I hope thats handled well and not cliched bullshit, as it will easily be well done or kill the series for me.

I don't think the town is "smaller" by any means, i just think these first two episodes have been spent focusing on the political struggle. The dialogue is still kinda tough to follow, but i have no problem watching this show twice and if you have any questions about other characters returning why don't you check the plot description, it might help

Yes, that WAS the prostitue Mom. Until I read your post I thought she might have been Lila, the bearded lady, but now I think you're right. She looks like she might'a gained some weight, too.

Looks like Hearst has both Tolliver AND Al over a barrel...for now...can't wait to see that "heavy hand" come down on Tolliver's snout, if it ever comes. I hate that sonofabitch. Looks like he's getting cowardly, too.

How about Wu's new word..."HO!!"

Good ep. Setting up a lot of potential events.

How historically accurate is this show? If it's been pretty close, anybody care to put in spoilers what happens to Hearst or Al?

SWEARENGEN: "Tuesdays, he'll often hold Amateur Nights. I been to several. Guy farted it seems near an hour."

BURNS: "Don't sound like no amateur."

Al
Spoiler:
The Gem in its prime was said to take in $5,000 on most nights, and $10,000 on some, yet Swearengen died penniless. He left Deadwood soon after the 1899 fire and was killed not long after while trying to board a train in Denver’s rail yard.
He was not orphaned, his father actually worked at the Gem, and he was thrice married in Deadwood.

You know of Hearst's legacy but for him
Spoiler:
Later in life George Hearst served as a United States Senator from California from 1887 until his death in 1891

Spoiler:
From what I've read, the real Al Swearingen ended up dying penniless, shot while hopping a train hobo-style. The Hearst family, on the other hand, wound up building a publishing empire.

So, if I had to guess who eventually comes out on top...

EDIT: Oops. It appears that Cusm beat me to the punch!

So does Doc have lung-cancer or something?

I noticed his voice was off a few episodes ago, and that he'd been speaking less, but yikes, I hope they don't kill him off, he's one of my favorite characters.

I'm guessing TB, which, when combined with the new actor-in-residence and

leads me to think Milch is paying homage to My Darling Clementine.

Could someone please post a pic of Richardson's thumbs up to Farnum? My desktop could use new wallpaper.

That was hilarious, but I'm not sure I could look at that face every time I turned on my computer.

Agreed, since he was shooing Trixie out when he'd coughed for fear of contagiousness.

And yes, the woman that showed up is Cynthia Ettinger, who played Rita Sue on Carnivale. Glad to see her make an appearance!

More great lines from this week:

EB: Candidly, Richardson, as I imagine you foraging for berries and grubs, and flicking at insects with your sticky tongue, I feel a certain dismay.

Richardson: What are you talking about?

EB: You are to be discharged, fool. As, I suspect in a wink of time, once some stage from a different direction arrives with my replacement, am I.

Richardson: What did we do wrong?

EB: Your error, surprisingly enough, is not to be a grotesque of inconceivable stupidity, but that you are white and male and not repulsively obese. As for my own, I wonder if it lies in an excessive courtesy and eagerness to please.
________________________________________________________________

Trixie: My God, look at Wu. Lost his mind in San Francisco.
Al: You think he married the **********?
Trixie: I’m talking about his suit.
________________________________________________________________

Hearst: Having secured your approval as to my hiring plans, I wonder now if I might elicit the information I came for, which is in regard to Mrs. Ellsworth.

EB: I am abjectly at your disposal.

Hearst: For some time, without the unseemliness of approaching her directly, I have sought without success to generate a connection with Mrs. Ellsworth.

EB: A haughty ****. Formerly weak for dope. Most fundamentally a sexual peccant, though I’m sworn against providing specifics.

Hearst: Now, as it seems of her own volition, Mrs. Ellsworth appoints to meet with me, leading me to wonder what change in her situation prompts her approach.

EB: I will look into that, Sir, vigorously and immediately.

Hearst: You don’t know.

EB: I do not know at present.

Hearst: Just send her up when she gets here.

EB: I can seek the knowledge out. I can pursue it as a first priority.

Hearst: Just send her the fuck up.

Elsworth was killing me when in the same room w/ Hearst.

"I'll not be insulted in my own rooms, Mr. Elsworth."

"Where shall we go for me to do it?"

Loved Ellsworth in this episode. Acted like a real husband and showed some sack that has been lacking. Great season so far. There hasn't been a minute I haven't enjoyed. Scared about the Doc though. He is one of my favorite characters and one of the only characters who truly looks out for the best of the camp no matter what. Essential if you ask me.

That was awesome.

That Hearst is one scary bastard. Definately the best outside "villain" the show has had so far. Major Dad is nailing the role perfectly. This may sound dumb (and make little sense), but I love that this show seems to let actors act. There is always a scene or two (if not whole episodes) that seem worthy of study to me.
