CARS: DVD extra revealed

They usually keep their DVD plans secret, but CG animation house Pixar has revealed a little of what to expect on the eventual DVD release Cars. One of the bonus features that they are currently working on is a five-minute animated short entitled "Ghost Light" and starring Larry the Cable Guy reprising his role as Mater the tow truck. "It's much like the movie," Larry said in an interview. "They wanted to show Mater's heart and how he was toward other people." The short is based on a legendary reported phenomenon on the actual Route 66. "It's the head of a decapitated Indian floating around," Route 66 biographer and film consultant Michael Wallis explained. "That's the story, but it's a big gaseous ball that hovers around Route 66 [through] Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma." Other extras on the DVD might include home movies of the filmmakers' tour of Route 66, as well as technical animation bloopers. (Thanks to Home Media Retailing)

Accdg to the bits http://www.thedigitalbits.com

The upcoming release will be pretty thin...
You'll get separate anamorphic widescreen and full frame editions (SRP $29.99), each of which is single-disc. Extras will include the Mater and the Ghost and One Man Band animated shorts, 4 deleted scenes, the Inspiration for Cars featurette and a preview trailer for Pixar's forthcoming Ratatouille animated feature film. That's it.
Listen, do you smell something? A smell....a smelly smell...the smell...of a double dip.

I've come to expect excellent, packed 2-DVD editions from Pixar. This is pretty disappointing.

I'm not sure. Besides the Two Disc Bug's Life and both Toy Stories, which were OOP so basically they were re-releases, Pixar hasn't done the dredded double dip.

You forget, they've been taken into the House of Mouse fold. I expect to hear more about this before release date.

When they release it, I'll buy it. Pixar releases are an auto-buy for me.

If there is a double-dip, I'll worry about that then.

Not for thirty bucks though. If it streets for more than 17.99 or so, I'll be waiting on the DD. Shame, too; this was the first [and only, so far] movie my boy saw in the theater.

Gotta agree with you there. It's a Pixar film... the frigging thing doesn't need some silly banner like that (which will be meaningless in a few months).

Actually, that packaging lends some strength to the theory that this won't be the last time we're seeing this on DVD. Can you imagine that the film will still say "#1 Animated Movie of the Year" in 2008?

I'm dissapointed on the artwork cover and the lack of extras. I have come to expect better DVD presentation from Pixar.

I cannot wait for this release!

The banner sucks though. No need to advertise that. It will sell it self.

The "#1 Animated Movie of the Year" banner likely will not be part of the cover seen on store shelves. Previews of the cover for Shrek 2 showed a similar boast--"#1 Animated Movie of All Time"--at the bottom of the artwork, but it was missing when the DVD was released. This is probably just promotional.

As do I.

Financially, yes, it's the highest of the year.

Of All Time - HELL NO.

Of This Year - No. Anyone who saw A Scanner Darkly or Monster House can agree with me on that.

That is not a Pixar cover, that's a Disney cover... What a shame... Crossing my fingers and holding my breath they anounce a 2-disc Collector's Editon, as with every Pixar film.

Where are the teasers? Where's the commentary?

I'm really discouraged with this and the X-Men 3 announcement. Both discs have most of what I want but don't quite hit the mark. I may have to skip these for now and see if 2-disc editions follow.

I am actually a bit shocked by this single disc release and also hope that a 2-disc will be released too on 11/7

this is a bunch a bullshit. Hopefully those are not the final specs. This should be a 2 disc that are fully loaded. Has to be Di$ney's doing.

Note to MOD: can U add the release date to the title of this Thread. thanks

If there was ever a Pixar release that had to have more background stuff than any other Pixar flick, Cars was it. From everyhting I've been reading about Cars over the past year, I was really expecting tons of development stuff in the DVD extras. Something akin to what came on the Toy Story discs.

So add me to the list of disappointees.

However, I can't say I'm too surprised. Much as I hate to say it, it seems each new Pixar DVD release has had less going for it than the previous one. Off the top of my head, I can't say why, but I was rather disappointed over all with the Incredibles DVD extras.

This is just the obvious end of a trend, I guess.

Has this "officially" been announced? I think video retailers just have a tentative release date.
