You will need to see if the dvd recorder is capable of recording HDTV, most are not. check your manual and check to see if you have either a DVI or HDMI input.

NO dvd recorder can record in hd.

The best you'll be able to do is record anamorphically in 480i and that depends on the box.

If you have a motorola box, you can record in real time using the firewire out into a video card.

Do computers not have DVD recorders? Also, there's no reason to assume he meant stand-alone; he never said that.

Uh. No they don't. They have burners.

A DVD Recorder is a stand-alone.

How do the bit torrent peeps put out hdtv files then? Are those 480i? Some of the ones I've seen look like an HD feed.

They go through a PC.

so there are pc cards that can accept and save hdtv signals? I've only seen ones that do composite signals.

An OTA (ATSC) tuner would work, of course. And you can use firewire from some set top boxes to get them into a PC.

But there are no component-in cards (well, some exist but they cost thousands of dollars) or DVI/HDMI-in cards.

You are right - it's a stand alone DVD BURNER.

Let's not get into semantic games. We've known each other longer than that on this board.

Regardless...

Re-read the first post. Does it REALLY sound like he's talking about a PC to you?

Please.

It is not semantics. There is a lot more to a DVD Recorder than a "standalone DVD Burner." A DVD Recorder has to capture the source video, encode it to an MPEG-2 VOB, and burn it to the DVD using the DVD file/disc structure. Yes, with the appropiate additional hardware and software, a PC with a DVD Burner can do the same thing. However, it is still termed a PC, not a "DVD Recorder."

Do either the typical TIVO or DVR pieces given to you by digital cable folks record in HD?

Since we do not watch many things live I'm wondering if it's worth upgrading if we have to record most shows anyway. I'm currently getting the local channels in HD with standard cable when we do watch things live.

Depends on your cable company. I know my TWC only has one HD DVR. Any of them will save your HD stuff to the hard drive. Just don't expect to get it off of their digitally.
