Babe: Is this a widescreen movie?

I checked out a Babe DVD from my local library, and it turned out to be the "Full Screen Special Edition." Looking in DVD Profiler I see most editions are full screen, but there is evidently an anamorphic widescreen version available on DVD. Was the theatrical release of this movie widescreen (presumably 1.78:1)? Thanks for any info.

I think the widescreen went OOP for some reason.

Well, OK, maybe it's OOP. So, my next question is this: How much am I missing by watching the doggoned FS version? TIA.

You're at DVD Talk. Pretty much everybody here prefers the original theatrical ratio of movies, which in this case is 1.85:1.

The movie was shot open-matte. Shots without visual effects have excess picture at the top and bottom of the frame. Shots with visual effects (i.e. anytime an animal talks) are cropped on the sides.

The movie was composed for 1.85:1.

I ran this in a movie theater for several weeks, the prints were 1.85 hard-matted.

Yes, how embarrassing to own a $100 million hit that earned Oscar nods for best supporting actor and best picture.

No clue what you're talking about pal. Babe is an extremely good movie in my opinion and I'm proud to own it.

Can anyone speak to this issue:

The double movie DVD offering Babe Family Double Feature,

UPC: 025192699122

appears to have Babe in Full Frame and Babe Pig in the City in anamorphic widescreen. Why would they do that? If Babe was originally widescreen, why in the world would they mix formats in a package offering?

Checking out Amazon.com's customer reviews, many people complained at the absurdity of releasing Babe in a full screen only edition.

The individual disc of the sequel had both WS and P&S on the same disc. The first movie they mistakenly first issued only in P&S, but when they reissued it a couple years ago they put out separate WS and P&S versions, and you could buy the box set with either the WS or P&S Babe disc plus the sequel with both versions on the same disc. They've since put out a DVD-18 of both movies, but only included the P&S version of Babe on that one.
