This is a strange list most notably because it is from someone who knows more than the common films everyone throws out there from actors. The great Gena Rowlands for A Woman, Emily Watson from Breaking the Waves, Liv Ullmann for Persona, Nicholson for The Last Detail, Hackman for The Conversation (instead of French Connection), Crowe for The Insider (instead of a Gladiator). You can go on here, it is an interesting list for the inclusions of films like Breaking the Waves and for choosing actors for their more lesserknown work.

I am not going to try and say this list is terrible and I disagree! It is a list that is the nature of them. For a mainstream publication it has some interesting inclusions.

I thought it was strange that of all Tom Hank's movies, they chose Big. Did they forget about The 'burbs and Joe vs. The Volcano?

It's almost as if they made an effort to specifically choose lesser known performances so it seems like a more 'important' list.
However, other than a few glaring missteps it does shape up as a credible list.

No Richard Burton = no sale!

Not a bad list overall, but some silly inclusions like Groundhog Day and Pirates of the Caribbean and Edward freakin' Scissorhands.

The fact that Al Pacino in SCARFACE and Jack Nicholson in THE SHINING are not listed indicates the editors of PREMIERE are interested in a wholly different acting aesthetic than myself...

By and large it seems a pretty good list. FWIW, when I saw the thread title two performances came to mind immediately - they ended up being the first two on the list.

I personally thought Kate Winslet performance in 'Heavenly Creatures' was a tad better than 'Eternal Sunshine'

Not a bad list, happy they included Gena Rowlands, Burt Lancaster and Maria Falconetti in their respective roles.

I totally agree that Hanks, Foxx and Witherspoon have no place on this list. Total none entities in my opinion. I think more Eastwood, Olivier, Oldman maybe the odd Caine and more Walken should be added.

I agree with Pirates, but the other two are fantastic. Especially Depp in Edward Scissorhands. One of my favorite performances.

Even though they went out of their way to pick lesser known performances, doesn't mean those performances aren't great: Nicholson in The Last Detail for example.

I really liked the inclusion of Foxx and especially Witherspoon. I liked the pick for Edward Scissorhands, but not for Pirates.

Big shouldn't have been on the list, but glad they recognized Cast Away (is it me, or was this film forgotten)?

Crowe deserves to be on that list, he was excellent in The Insider, even though I thought Al Pacino was great as well but always overlooked.

Wrong Bill Murrey performance.

The two that I am really sad to see not on the list is Will Smith in Ali (watched this again the other day) and Tom Cruise in Magnolia or maybe Depp for Fear and Loathing instead of Pirates. And no Morgan Freeman for Shawshank? Oh well.

why would you note a good performance simply because it is more well-known?

i wholly agree with Hackman in "The Conversation" and Crowe in "The Insider". i didn't think "Gladiator" was all that great, let alone win best picture and Best Actor. "The Insider" meanwhile was a gripping good yarn that i was simply blown away by. While I love "The French Connection" , i thought "The Conversation" was a remarkable piece solely for the performance of Hackman in a role unlike most of his in his career. that is the one DVD i always regretted selling at the time.

the article was for performance and not movie as a whole and in that respect i totally agree. just because it is more well known don't make it better.

Absolutely. Except for Oldman, who I don't like too much.

I'm with Lopez. No Brando for Godfather? The fuck is up with that? Thumbs up for putting his On the Waterfront turn in the top two, though. I'm ashamed to admit that I've never made an evening out of watching Lawrence of Arabia, so I can't comment on whether or not Brando's Terry Malloy should be number one over the Peter O'Toole performance, but it's easily the best piece of acting I've ever seen.

Thanks for another great post scott as you obviously once again don't understand what someone else is trying to say before you comment. I was meaning usually these type of publications point out performances from actors that are more well known. This one did not.

I was thinking about this and would have liked to have seen at least One child performance, hopefully River Pheonix (Stand By Me, Running on Empty, My Own Private Idaho).
