Article about MGMs Midnite Movies at DVD Drive-In.com

Basically it says that Sony wants to get involved and it wants to expand it away from the sci-fi/horror genre----BOO HISS(they didn't say that- I did).

"Sony is broadening the film genres included beyond the series’ previous horror focus."

That doesn't mean that they won't do horror/sci-fi titles. It just means that they'll do more types of films.

They're also raising the price from $14.95 to $19.94.

Also from that article, it appears that the new Platoon release next month will indeed be another one of their editions with deleted scenes inserted into the movie (all the more reason for me not to buy it).

Oh, and we're apparently getting new editions of the Spider-Man movies. Whoopee.

This could possibly suck for those that are completists. Thankfully I'm not one of 'em

The Midnite Movies series already had other genres in it: biker movies, beach romps, 60's drug-psychedalia, etc. It just shows you how clueless Sony is about what the MM series was all about.

These pirate-movie combos are a slap in the face to the series and its fans. These are simply piggy-back titles Sony's dishing out because of "Pirates of the Caribbean" - they have NOTHING to do with the true MM line except for the MM banner title haphazardly slapped on the front of the cases.

Sony can babble about reviving the MM series all they want, but I won't believe it until I see it. As far as I'm concerned, these two pirate discs are more of a nail-in-the-coffin to the series than any type of revival.

Tom - I AM somewhat of a completist, but I'm even skipping these two discs. I foresee that these two pirate discs will most likely hit the market and sink fast while the true lost treasures will continue to be locked away in MGM's vaults. Prove me wrong, Sony.

I hope that Sony will reissue It Conquered the World, Frank Zappa's favorite science fiction film, on DVD. It's a wee bit hard to find. Even the Mystery Science Theater 3000 version of the film is unavailable.

I figured a long time ago if they finally brought it back, they'd raise the price. And you just know, when they do get around to their horror and sci-fi titles, the transfers won't be up to par with what MGM did for them. Who knows if they'll even be OAR.

Sony, gotta hate 'em.

Agreed! Why not release some old AIP titles like "Riot on Sunset Strip" and "Maryjane", "Food of the Gods", etc. instead?

Does anyone have a complete list of all the MGM "Midnight Movies" that have currently been released? (or any slated for release soon?). I thought I had all of them, but every now and then I'll run across one that I don't have yet. I think I overlooked a batch of releases one week or something.

Thanks,

Roy

I bought all of them except the "Beach Party" type films. I'll get the pirate films too, since I love old pirate movies. But I certainly hope they don't just keep releasing titles to piggyback more popular movies.

38: War-Gods Of The Deep/At The Earth's Core

The following Midnite Movies have only ever been released as single titles (some of the above were released as singles, then released as a double, paired with a film new to the range)

Angry Red Planet
Beast Within
A Bucket of Blood
Donovan's Brain
Dr. Goldfoot And The Bikini Machine
Frogs
I Bury The Living
Island of Dr. Moreau
Killer Klowns From Outer Space
Man From Planet X
Mars Needs Women
Pajama Party
Planet of The Vampires
Reptilicus
X - The Man With The X-Ray Eyes

Note that the single titles are all officially out of print. Also, many of the early doubles went out of print - certainly, all of the ones released before the 2004 batch - but most if not all of them were re-released in March 2005.

A lot of them were also exclusive to Best Buy on first release (excluding Canada where they were always available from "certain online stores"), but went on to be available generally when they were re-released. In the 2005 batch, they were going to be Best Buy only, but that fell through, and they went straight into general release in September.

As you can see, in marketing terms they've been a bit of a nightmare, particularly the bizarre "exclusive to Best Buy but maybe not in Canada and only for a while" strategy. They've also had a tendancy to go randomly in and out of print. One can't help but feel MGM did a big re-release in March 2005 to squeeze the juice from the range before Sony came in an spoilt everything!

AFAIK most of them are easily availe at present

"Going forward, Sony will raise the price of the Midnite titles from $14.95 apiece to $19.94."
"Bishop described the slight price hike as a way “to get more out of the titles.”'
33% increase is a "slight" price hike? Granted, you could probably find them cheaper, I think I got Killer Klowns for 9.99, but still.

How many SpiderMan releases have there been?
