Tarantino To Direct Hendrix Movie?

(I chose to put this in Movie News just because of the notoriety of the director discussed; it is also Music News, obviously.)

From Yahoo! Music News:

Tarantino To Direct Hendrix Movie?
04/26/2006 7:00 PM, Yahoo! Music
Ben Gilbert - LAUNCH U.K. & Ireland
Quentin Tarantino will direct a forthcoming biopic about Jimi Hendrix, according to reports.

The infamous filmmaker is said to have agreed to shoot the film, which is thought to have been in production for some months.

Tarantino will collaborate with Leon Hendrix, Jimi's brother, on the movie, and will be given full access to his name, likeness, and archive interview footage for the project.

Shooting is expected to begin later this year, with the movie scheduled to take in numerous cities that played host to the life of Hendrix, including Seattle, New York, Toronto, and London.

I'm a Tarnatino fan but not a Hendrix one, so this is somewhat disappointing news for me.

Hendrix fan, mild Tarantino fan. I am so there.

I hope it doesn't get scewed up. Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown are excellent, but not sure of Tarantino as a biographer.

I'm a big fan of both, so I'm in, for sure. Although I agree with QT's track record being spotty, and I'm hoping for the best.

Hearing that Tarantino is directing a movie is actually almost a guarantee that either he isn't directing it or it's never coming out.

Wow. I wonder if Quentin Tarantino is a Hendrix fan? He really likes to talk about the things he likes and I never heard him mention Hendrix. You really need a director to be passionate about Jim Hendrix and his music to get a good movie.

I don't really remember Oliver Stone raving about Jim Morrison before he made The Doors, but that movie was awesome.

I thought it was awesome until I saw Walk the Line and Ray, 2 movies that show how biopics about musicians should be made.

Exactly. This guy has been attached or rumored to be directing about 50 different films. That is why I love Woody Allen at least one movie a year. If Tarantino lives till he's a 100, we'll get 10 movies total.

So what you're saying is... he isn't doing the Hendrix film so he can do the Friday the 13th sequel?

What about Inglorious Bastards, Friday the 13th, Kill Bill prequel etc. etc. He's been associated with so many films its not even funny. I like his work so it'll be nice if he makes it but Im not holding my breath.

At his film festival he thought out loud, "I'm not directing this movie."

Inglorious Bastards will probably actually happen though. He said he finished the screenplay finally and was going to do another draft of it. I would expect it to be his next film after Grind House.

Uh yeah...didn't Grind House just get cancelled?

Hendrix fan and Tarantino fan. If this is true, I might want to watch this. A while back Showtime did a fairly interesting biopic of Hendrix, but they screwed up by including generic "Hendrix-style" music instead of paying good money to use the real deal. That was a disgrace. Let's hope this one does better.

Actually, I like The Doors more than the other two, because the other two essentially take an objective look at their subject. The Doors felt like what it might have been like in Jim Morrison's head. Both approaches have their appeal, but a straight biopic of Jim Morrison wouldn't be nearly as interesting as the way Stone did it.

Nope. They've been filming in Austin for quite a while, so it'd be a pretty odd and expensive time to cancel the film. To quote this page...

Misinformation Superhighway
Hmm — seems the panicky report about Robert Rodriguez pulling the plug and canceling the movie wasn't exactly, uh, true. Turns out they were just done filming and wanted to go home. Stupid Internet.

I'm actually directing my own short film right now. If I have time later on, I'll direct a Hendrix biography.
