David Copperfield

It is a shame that Universal didn't put this on the new 12 Monkeys release. It is the natural place for this short.

John Boorman recently completed a commentary track for an upcoming DELIVERANCE: Special Edition that will be released sometime 2006/2007.

Reds is supposedly coming out later this year.

There is a Capra boxset coming out later this year too, so Mr Smith Goes to Washington may be upgraded.

Judging by the current trend, the AOL/HBO's summer Screen on the Green series here in DC is always an indication of what will be "getting an upgrade". Recent years included:The Big Sleep, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, A Streetcar Named Desire, All the President's Men, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington

All have had SE's come out after being in the series. So there is hope for Mr. Smith.

African Queen--no new word on when Paramount will release this
Reds--tentatively scheduled for November
La Jetee--Criterion has the rights to Sans soleil; La Jetée would be an obvious accompaniment; no word on release date
Woman in the Dunes--per Milestone, Criterion now has the rights, but no word on when it will be released
David Copperfield--release planned, no date given (Warner HTF Chat)
Greed--2006 or 2007 (Warner HTF Chat)
L.A. Confidential--2-disc SE in 2007 (Warner HTF Chat)
Battleship Potemkin--Criterion will (someday) release the definitive version; their Eisenstein: The Silent Years has been stalled for over 5 years (Peter Becker revealed it was being worked on in December 1999)

Wow, that was some great info. Thrilled about Woman in the Dunes, just thrilled to hear that Criterion finally has it. Counting the days until that release.

I will also hold off on several of the titles you listed now. Thanks for helping.

He was asking about the original AL JOLSON version. You know, the one people actually care about.

Though rumored for more than three years, as of April 2003, the 1927 Jazz Singer was in the process of being restored. Restoration was still in progress in October 2004. So, it's in the pipeline, but that's about all we know.

As for Buster Keaton's Sherlock Jr.: France's mk2 released a 10-disc Keaton boxset in October 2005. Based on the screencaps, the mk2 transfer appears identical to that released by Kino in 2001 (produced by the great David Shepard). This is odd because, in 2004, the copyright holders of the Keaton films--the Douris Corporation--had contracted with mk2 to perform a new digital restoration of this film, along with several others.

I would heartily recommend the current Kino Sherlock Jr. (which is paired with the excellent Our Hospitality), though you should know that some have criticized the Club Foot Orchestra score Kino has included. While it would be nice if the Keaton silents were accorded the same expensive, lavish attention that the Chaplin films received from mk2/Warner in 2003 (restorations, introductions, documentaries, etc.), AFAIK, nothing of that sort appears to be on the horizon for the Keatons.

That was the first release with the great and very candid Portrait of a Lady behind the scenes doc. Too bad it has nver seen re-release since. The downside is that the first release is missing lots of extras, including the commentary tracks for La Jetee. It's still one of the best in teh series. It also features a great obscure short by Guy Maddin. He even does a commentary track.

Maybe The African Queen needs to migrate to Criterion for proper restoration and a more 'timely' release...

La Jetee seems to be hinted at by the latest Criterion newsletter.

Ok, I've gotten some of the movies since the original post, so that's good, but there are a lot still out there. Can you elaborate on why the clue in the CC newsletter points to La Jette?

This seems to be a good thread to keep discussing possible re-releases. I notice that Bonnie and Clyde's 40th Anniversary is this year. Is Warners preparing a possible 2-disc release? This film is dying for an updated disc. Currently, it's only a flipper disc with wide/full versions. ugh

Also, I hope we will start seeing some type of release info for those supposed special edition versions of the Kubrick films (The Shining, 2001, etc.)

-Poltergeist. Wasn't this mentioned before as being released as a special edition for this year's 25th Anniversary?
