i don't know what imdb.com's source was for this, but i thought the choices were pretty respectable and worth posting, if true.

Liked Boogie Nights, but it's not top 10 for me unlike 2001 & Godfather. So 2 out of 5 ain't bad!

I'm surprised he didn't pick a movie from the old days. Something tells me he was a Jimmy Stewart fan.

He's spot-on with his top pick; everything goes astray from there...

My fav Tom Hank movies are:
Forest Gump
Sleepless in Seattle
BIG
Saving P Ryan
Cast Away

Love Toy Story 1 and 2, but these are just different and I could not include in the list above.

I know what this thread means, just having some fun.

Wow. Elephant? Surprised about that one, because I thought I heard (on Fox News) that it was Elephant Man. Guess I was mistaken.

to Hanks for having Boogie Nights as a fave.

Boogie Nights is one of my favorite films as well.

Though someone ought to mention to him that other countries make movies as well.

I guess. I don't particularly find his opinions of any better value over anybody elses, though.

Hmmm. So someone's Top 5 list is invalid if it doesn't contain any foreign films?

Elephant? The high school shooting massacre film? Interesting choice, and the IMDB is NEVER WRONG!

Bonfire of the Vanities

honourable mention: The Man with One Red Shoe

a tribute to our geeky, former slapstick genious.

No, it's true (I swear I heard that douche Shepard Smith say Elephant Man, though).

http://today.reuters.com/news/articl...E-HANKS-DC.XML

BERLIN (Reuters) - Two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks picked "2001: A Space Odyssey" as his favorite film of all time and selected four other films among his "top five" that he had nothing to do with.

"I just can't see enough of '2001: A Space Odyssey'," the American actor told Germany's Bild newspaper in an interview published on Thursday. Stanley Kubrick directed the 1968 film.

Hanks also picked "Elephant" (2003) by Gus Van Sant because it "is one of the most moving films I've ever seen." He also listed "The Godfather" (1972) by Francis Ford Coppola, "Fargo" (1996) by Joel and Ethan Coen among his all-time favorites.

Hanks, who won two Academy Awards for best actor in "Philadelphia" and "Forrest Gump," rounded out his top five with "Boogie Nights" (1997).

The movie, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, is about the porn industry in the late 1970s and early 1980s and the social attitude of that era.

"That film was a revelation for me," said Hanks, 49, who has made more than 40 films.

He said he likes films that give the viewer a chance to ask themselves how they would react in a similar situation.

"That's what I'm looking for when I go to see a film, just like any other cinema-goer," he said. "The period, the topic or the genre don't matter to me. The only thing that matters for me is: 'boy, what would you do if that were you?"'

I'd love to see Hanks work with Anderson, and I hope he works with the Coens again.

FWIW, Peter Scolari just released his Top 5 list. I thought it was kind of interesting:

2010
The Godfather Part III
Honey, I Shrunk the Kids
Elephant Man
Magnolia

You had me laughing until you implied THE ELEPHANT MAN was a substandard choice for a favorite...
