Your favorite bass guitar lines (per genre)?

So about two years ago, we discussed the best bass guitar solo.

Well, per genre, what are your favorites? I don't care how you break it down. Pop, rock, jazz, blues, fusion, metal, punk, whatever.

I was going to post the ones I like but then I realized half of them probably aren't even a bass guitar. (Music theory, nay, fact is not my strong suit).

Probably either "With or Without You" (the very definition of simplistic perfection) or "New Year's Day" by U2 (Adam Clayton).

Gotta agree with this. I remember back in the late 70's-early 80's going through my really HUGE stereo speakers phase. Hadda crank up the bass boost while listening to The Stranglers.

4 posts, and no one has said the Ox's line in the intro to "The Real Me." For shame.

I don’t listen to many different genres of music, but I’ll list a few of my favorite rock oriented bass lines.

Wynona’s big brown beaver – Primus
YYZ – Rush
Flying High Again – Ozzy (any of the Bob Daisley songs will do)
No Excuses – Alice In Chains
Peace Sells – Megadeth
Around the World – RHCP

I like the following basslines quite a bit:

The Beatles - "Rain" (Sir Paul McCartney)
Sly and the Family Stone - "If You Want Me To Stay" (Larry Graham)
John Coltrane - "Giant Steps" (Paul Chambers)
The Four Tops - "It's the Same Old Song" (James Jamerson)
Joy Division - "She's Lost Control" (Peter Hook)

by genre,

Pop: Michael Jackson - Billie Jean
Soul: Stevie Wonder - I was Made to Love Her (of course by James Jamerson)
80s: Prince - Erotic City
Rock: QOTSA - No One Knows (cool little licks and breakdown)
House: Mylo - Rikki
Electro____: Vitalic - La Rock 01 (makes me go crazy on the dancefloor)
Funk: Creative Source - Who is He and What is He to You
Disco: The Jacksons - Can You Feel It
Hip-Hop: Mos Def - May-December
for jazz I'd have to go with Giant Steps too

Gotta go with Entwistle on "The Real Me." Interesting to listen to that on the original album, then the version on the movie soundtrack, and then the version on the Royal Albert Hall DVD. Great evolution there. Haven't picked up the Quadrophenia tour DVD yet, but I will soon.
