I just got back from the local Walmart here in MA and they have the Narnia regular dvd for $13.97 and the 2 disk SE Narnia for $24.50 This whole situation with the dvd companies putting out 2 versions is ridiculous now. We have to pay $10 MORE for a extra disk that they use to give us for free? Give me a break, I am completely disgusted right now with the whole dvd universe. The bare bones versions are horrible so we have to pay more to get extras? Greed, nothing but greed...

double the disc...double the cost....makes sense to me

I like what universal has done with the fancier packaging like seabiscuit, cinderella man, ray, etc.

That would be fine, except they use to give us 2 disk sets in the past for the same price they now charge for the 1 disk version. DVD's are so cheap to make it makes no sense to me. I saw a Stephen King Rose Red 2 disk set today for 4.88 at Walmart. Alot cheaper than 24.50 for SE Narnia and both have the same thing!

I have this theory that the companies are doing this as an incentive for getting Blu-Ray/HDDVD. They'll make a 1-disk Blu-Ray which has more special features cost the same as a 1-disk DVD.

One thread was old as hell and worthless as can be. The other was decent, but I will NOT go digging to find a similar thread from the past...Waste of time..

I don't mind, actually. I don't care about special feature for the most part so I'm always glad to take a cheaper DVD for just the movie.

I totally agree with this, I remember picking up the 3 previous Harry Potter movies 2 disc se for $14.95, I had to pay $23.99 for the 2 disc set of the Goblet of Fire makes no sense when it costs so little to press dvds. I mean come on, the studios all of a sudden woke up and smelled the coffee and realized they could rake in more money on special features. I do believe this is a setup to sell more HD/Blue Ray dvds, I have a feeling once they arrive you won't get anymore special features on regular dvd, to get some extras you will have to get the more pricey HD/Blue Ray discs.

I think they are out of hand with pricing extras due to the amount of time. If a dvd has 4 commentaries - they can say the extras are "Over 6 hours!!!!" and then price it ten dollars more.

I've rarely seen DVDs with Extras that are worth the extra cost, except for the Lord of the Rings Extended DVDs. When there is obvious work and interesting documentaries put into a DVD, then it is okay to price it a bit more. Most extras are so generic now. According to the standard of generic extras, I don't think movie companies even expect people to watch extras more than once.

Luckily for me, I feel the same way so the switchover to pay-extra-for-extras-now doesn't really affect me. When they start withholding technical features such as widescreen versions, DTS tracks, etc. for the "Collector's Edition" then I'll be pissed. Of course that may be coming (DTS on CE of Lord of War) soon, so who the hell knows.

I hear ya Billy, it sucks big time. The arguements for it just don't hold water when taking into account what the pricing structure used to be. While some studios price the SE's much higher from the get-go, the retailers are mostly to blame for the disparity in "sale" prices. Fortunately I've been able to get close to normal prices with either coupons, misprices, or the DDD sale.

At least I won't be buying DVD's too much longer...

they should be able to, cuz isn't that there whole selling point that it can hold 10-20x more information than a normal dvd? Ooh...maybe they'll be s.o.l. when they try to screw the public now...haha

Billy is bang on, they've jacked up the price of the two disk set, invented a new "neutered" set and priced it at the old price, and people eat it up.

I won't buy Kong, Narnia, any of them.

I won't bite either on these ridiculous prices. I've never been too keen on the special features either. I want the movie in the best quality/sound I can get and I also go for any additional scenes (More so when added into the movie). Like the LOTR sets.

I went the single disc route. That crap is not worth the ten extra dollars. IMO they should be getting cheaper not trying to rip us off even more.

Just wait will get Super Duper Silly Crazy Extra Nuts Cool Editions of these as well which are more attempts to rip us off.

The only time I'll Double Dip anymore is if they do add > 10 minutes of extra features and add a DTS track or something....that's about it.

if we're talking about "used to be" then lets talk about laserdisc, or deluxe vhs packages... 75-200 bucks...your paying for the content, not the format.

I wish they'd bring back $125 laserdisc special editions.

It may be out of hand, but as long as people keep buying them studios will keep doing it.
