Most Patriotic American Songs

Hey,
I'm trying to get a list of about 15 songs that are patriotic. Not like star spangled banner stuff, but things like Springsteen's Born in the USA. So what are the best? Any thoughts? Thanks.

Born in the USA is not patriotic. It's about the terrible experiences of a Vietnam veteran.

MERLE HAGGARD: Fightin' side of me

"I hear people talkin' bad,
About the way we have to live here in this country,
Harpin' on the wars we fight,
An' gripin' 'bout the way things oughta be.
An' I don't mind 'em switchin' sides,
An' standin' up for things they believe in.
When they're runnin' down my country, man,
They're walkin' on the fightin' side of me.
Yeah, walkin' on the fightin' side of me.
Runnin' down the way of life,
Our fightin' men have fought and died to keep.
If you don't love it, leave it:
Let this song I'm singin' be a warnin'.
If you're runnin' down my country, man,
You're walkin' on the fightin' side of me.

I read about some squirrely guy,
Who claims, he just don't believe in fightin'.
An' I wonder just how long,
The rest of us can count on bein' free.
They love our milk an' honey,
But they preach about some other way of livin'.
When they're runnin' down my country, hoss,
They're walkin' on the fightin' side of me.

Yeah, walkin' on the fightin' side of me.
Runnin' down the way of life,
Our fightin' men have fought and died to keep.
If you don't love it, leave it:
Let this song I'm singin' be a warnin'.
If you're runnin' down my country, man,
You're walkin' on the fightin' side of me."

With its stream of consciousness beauty I would like to add Kim Fowley’s “Is America Dead?” to the list.

Courtesy Of The Red, White And Blue (The Angry American) - Toby Keith.

"We'll put a boot in your ass, it's the American way."

And put in Bruce Spingsteen. 95% or more still think it is a Pro America song. 2% can actually tell what the lyrics are, and the other 3% have friends that can tell what the lyrics are.

Martina McBride's "Independence Day" is also a great one. Truly great.

"The Taliban" by Toby Keith
(forgive the grammar and punctuation, I copied and pasted it from another site)

"I'm just a middle-aged, middle-eastern camel herdin' man
I got a little, 2 bedroom cave here in North Afghanistan
Things used to be real nice and they got out of hand when they moved in
They call themselves the Taliban
(ooooo yeah the taliban) (taliban baby)

Now I ain't seen my wife's face since they came here
They make her wear a scarf over her head that covers her from ear to ear
She loves the desert and the hot white sand
But man she's just like me, nah she can't stand
The Taliban (ooo taliban baby)

You know someday soon we're both gonna saddle up and it'll be
Ride Camel Ride
My old lady she'll be here with me, smilin right by my side
We should do just fine out around Palestine or maybe Turkmenistan
We'll bid a fair adieu and flip the finger to the Taliban
(oh yeah the taliban) (baby)

I know where you comin from brother!
This is a patriotic love song
So y'all feel free to salute if you want,
You got my permission.

Now they attacked New York City cause they thought they could win
Said they would, stand and fight until the very bloody end
Mr Bush got on the phone with Iraq and Iran and said "Now, you
sons-of-bitches you better not be doin any business with the taliban"
(Taliban baby)

So we prayed to Allah with all of our might
Until those big U.S. jets came flyin one night
They dropped little bombs all over their holy land
And man you should have seen em run like rabbits, they ran
(the taliban)

You know someday soon we're both gonna saddle up and it'll be
Ride Camel Ride
My old lady she'll be here with me, smilin right by my side
We should do real fine out around Palestine or maybe Turkmenistan
We'll bid a fair adieu and flip a couple fingers to the Taliban
(oh yeah, taliban)
we'll bid a fair adieu and flip a big boner to The Taliban (baby)"

I can forgive the grammer and punctuation, but I can't forgive the inane lyrics.

Ride, camel ride? Did he forget a line about "Wrappin' my towel around my head?"

Lee Greenwod's "Proud to be an American" - Yeah, only proud to be capitalizing off a war. So in a way it does embody America, but not one of our better qualities.

Any Toby Keith song - I just don't believe that reinforcing the "ugly American" stereotype is patriotic.

Martina McBride's "Independance Day" - nothing to do with patriotism, it's about an abused woman that kills her husband (presumably) and burns the house down.

I say scrap your idea and just get Steve Earle's "The Revolution Starts Now".

That was easy.

I suppose an argument could be made either way, but the digs on Communism and being "happy she ain't in the red" pretty strongly imply Prince's preference for the U.S. over the other big global power of the day...

I think it's hilarious that Sean Hannity uses this as his theme song. I wonder if he's ever actually listened to the lyrics.

I see your point, but I've always taken the song as more of a "dig" against our own government, whereas the digs against Communism are merely implied. Prince doesn't go into a huge amount of commentary, but the sarcastic tone of the lyrics and minor key make for a pretty non-patriotic song in my book.

I honestly never once read the lyrics as sarcastic, but after your post, I can see how one might come away with that perception. I'm not prepared to share it, but it does certainly provide a rather schizophrenic read on the song. It's either a love song or a "fuck you" to the U.S.; maybe it's designed to be a get-out-of-it-what-you-bring-to-it experience...?
