my left and right tower speakers sound muffled, the center and surround sounds great, any idea?

It's possible you've blown them. I'd make sure all connections are tight with the speaker and receiver, then move on to replacing the wire. If that doesn't work, move the speakers to another receiver to make sure it isn't the receiver. If all fails, you've probably blown your speakers.

After checking as suggested, try playing a cd, 2 channel only, female vocal if possible.
