'The Office' Stays Open for Summer

Co-workers will star in web-only episodes
March 16 2006

Angela Kinsey, Oscar Nunez and Brian Baumgartner on 'The Office'

LOS ANGELES -- Just like in real life, some of the cast from "The Office" won't a whole lot of time off this summer.

NBC is planning to shoot 10 online-only "webisodes" of its critically acclaimed comedy to air during the offseason. The new material will bring some of the show's supporting players front and center as the Dunder Mifflin accounting staff searches for a stash of cash that's gone missing from the Scranton office.

Angela (Angela Kinsey), Kevin (Brian Baumgartner) and Oscar (Oscar Nunez) will lead the search for the missing money, with no one above suspicion. The web episodes will also feature "Office" regulars Rainn Wilson, Melora Hardin, Phyllis Smith, Leslie David Baker, Kate Flannigan and David Denman.

A debut date for the online episodes, which will stream at NBC.com, hasn't been set.

"The Office" has been a big part of NBC's efforts to attract viewers through non-traditional outlets. The network webcast an episode on MySpace prior to its premiere last year, and the show has been one of NBC's more popular downloads on Apple's iTunes.

The show has seen its ratings grown since it and "My Name Is Earl" made the move from Tuesday to Thursday nights in January. Since the switch, "The Office" has drawn about 8.7 million viewers per week and a 4.5 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic NBC prizes. The 18-49 number is a 22 percent improvement over its Tuesday average; viewers are up about 12 percent since the move.

That's awesome, but NBC's streaming sucks ass. I hope they make downloadable versions (for which I would cheerfully pay if necessary).

My experience with their streaming has also been teh suck, but for the first time something special is being offered that I really want to see, so I'll give it a try.

I also hope they are downloadable and will be included as a DVD extra in the future.

Any bonus Office footage is always a good thing. I hope these make it onto the Season 2 DVD set.

Well maybe this is also an indication that NBC is going to remedy their crumby streaming video issues. If not, they're setting themselves up to GET that message when the episodes go up and people start complaining (likely very LOUDLY) that they can't get the videos to stream well.

Unexpected but very welcome! Always nice when networks find creative ways to add more content to their shows.

In one of the earlier office threads, I figured out how to get direct links to the extras on the website because the streaming wasn't working - I'll try to get that together again if needed.

Popular Sitcom To Go Online-Only In Summer
NBC said that it will make 10 web-only episodes of popular comedy "The Office" during the summer, when the show is not on the air.

In a news release, the network said the "webisodes" will focus on a mystery facing the accounting staff of the Dunder-Mifflin paper company.

The three characters -- Angela, Kevin and Oscar -- are secondary parts of the regular ensemble cast.

The shows will be available on NBC.com.

Webisodes of 'The Office' begin July 13

I couldn't find the link on their website, but its on the front page of USA Today's LIFE section (5.31.06).

The Office caught in Web of mystery

NBC's The Office is filling its summer off-season with 10 'webisodes' premiering on NBC.com beginning July 13. The weekly installments - two to three minutes - feature the sitcom's supporting players, who are asked to solve a mystery. The accounting staff of Dunder Mifflin - Angela, Kevin, and Oscar - discovers $3,000 is missing.

From the article, it looks like Dwight, and everyone but Michael, Pam, and Jim will be involved.

Office Antics Continue on July 13
NBC.com will premiere the first of 10 original, stand-alone webisodes of The Office on July 13. The weekly online installments will chronicle accounting staff members Angela, Kevin and Oscar's quest to find a missing $3,000. Look for Dwight, Jan, Phyllis, Roy, Stanley and Meredith (hic!) to also put in appearances.
