Best Superhero Movie and why? (includes Summer 06)

I know two more big ones are coming out this summer ( "X-Men 3" and "Superman Returns", perhaps "V For Vendetta" as well) so I am including them in the poll in case you really think these will trump all thus far or you can wait to vote (I for one don't see this happening), but after seeing "Batman Begins" for the second time in 6 months (which for me is special) I think it for me has surpassed my all time favorite, annually watched "Superman: The Movie".

It is just so classily done and tells such a great story that I think it transcends the "superhero" genre and becomes an incredible action/drama movie which is really rare. To combine those two elements and include the "superhero" moniker makes a movie truly exceptional.

The performances were just stellar. Never over-the-top and all mixing real well. Bale was enormous as the new "Batman" and I think he and Chris Nolan brought exactly what was needed to the bolster the genre and franchise in an entirely new direction and I hope more "superhero" movies follow suit.

It was edgy and grounded in reality (being "The Batman" doesn't have mutant powers or anything) makes it all the more accessible to everyone and not just fanboys of "Batman" or superheros in general. I do think "Spider-Man 2" was also different and more dramatic, but "Batman Begins" took all the elements of a great theatrical movie and used it very wisely.

So what is your choice for best superhero movie of all time and why?

Let the debate begin...

[In case you were wondering, there was another thread, but that included only through 2003.
Best superhero movie through 2003?]

How can people comment on films they havent seen yet?

My vote for movies that have are already been in theatres are Superman 2, Spiderman 2 and Batman Begins.

Well, I have to go with Superman...I loved Batman Begins and Xmen 2, but everytime I see Superman on I have to put it on. I guess I can just remember the awe I felt when I was younger and seeing Superman on the television. Sure its dated, but great characters, good action and a flying person is all you can ask for in a movie .

As much as I know Spider-man could totally kick Batman's ass in every single way possible and that he's infinitely cooler, I would probably have to give it to "Batman Begins".

It's funny, with how excited I am still that they finally did a good Batman movie, that I'm gravitating toward X2. They're both so grand though. I may change my mind in 10 minutes.

Those are absolutely my two favorites.

i just included "Superman Returns" as an option as some may think this will just be the end all. the others meld into other options of the poll...

I also put Batman Begins at the top of my personal list in this category, but a very close second is The Incredibles. Equally influenced by the "Fantastic Four" comics and '60s-era "James Bond" films, it is a movie that I think succeeds on all levels, and bests most other Superhero movies in the fun-to-watch arena.

Spider-Man films, followed closely by Batman Begins.

I'm expecting Superman to win this poll though.

The Crow - I love this movie for Brandon alone.
Blade - fun action tho Dorff wasn't exactly a menacing type villain.

Batman Begins is good but lets get serious here, Batman 1989 beats the hell out of it.

The Incredibles was a better Fantastic Four movie than the Fantastic Four movie was.

I might have voted for the X-Men movies, but I'm really worried about the third one. I think it'll be the end of the series, even if it does end open ended enough for a sequel.

I'll shake things up and say Unbreakable. To me, one of the best realistic origin stories.

Superman.

Christopher Reeve just embodied Superman. The score by John Williams still gives me goosebumps. I just hope Returns can somewhat live up to the first two films.

I liked Unbreakable a lot, but I wouldn't call it much of an origin story. How much story is there beyond the basic info that like his nemisis Mr Glass, Bruce Willis's character is just some sort of statistical anomally.

But that's essentially what a superhero is, an individual with unique powers/abilities. To me, it was an origin story because it was about Wills' character discovering these abilities and exploring them.

Incredibles is as close to perfection as a super hero movie is going to get.

Are you going to elaborate, or was this the usual one-sentence hit-and-run post?

Blankman.

Depends on what you mean by "superhero" movie. If you're talking your typical summer popcorn, loud, colorful film, then I'd have to say the original X-Men.

However, if you are talking about a superhero movie that defies the norms of your typical hero flick - a film that really hits hard with action, brains, drama, cinematography, supporting cast, the works - then my vote is easily tossed towards Batman Begins. Exceeded my extremely high expections that amassed especially after the announcement of Nolan's direction.

I liked Superman the best, especially the first 10 or so times I saw it, but Batman Begins comes close.

Probably Batman Begins. As gryffinmaster said, it exceeded all of my expectations, and pretty much rocked it.

X-Men and Superman are great as well, but Batman Begins made me very happy.

Who cares? This isn't a popularity contest.
