Question about the new Battlestar Galactica
Does the new BG take place in modern times like the old one? I was kinda curious how the humans were going to act when they get to earth and find a monotheistic religion. Are they going to think the humans on earth are all cylons?

Since they haven't reached Earth, we don't really know in what time period the current show takes place. As far as I know, the producers of the show haven't hinted at anything like that.

I'm assuming it's way in the past, but I have no evidence to base that on.
It's either that, or way in the future after we've blown ourselves up. I am fairly certain there is no Battlestar Galactica 1980 in our future.

The only indication as to what kind of time frame we're dealing with is that the Colonials know what our zodiac constellations look like, which could put them anywhere near "modern times" within a wide spread of years -- thousands, actually.
So when finally DO make it to Earth they could discover any number of things:
1) They could end up on a prehistoric Earth and actually become the thirteenth colony they're looking for.
2) They could land on a present-day Earth, and find out the Earth was indeed a lost colony.
3) They could land on a far-future Earth and discover that Earth was their home of origin, and that the lost thirteenth colony was actually their homeworld.

New Question about Battlestar Galactica
I'm currently watching season one on DVD. If all the remaining humans are on these ships, why does the President hold press conferences with a bunch of reporters? Wouldn't it make more sense to just broadcast her announcement over one microphone that feeds into all the ships? There are several reporters with microphones and also taking notes. Are there competing newspapers and television stations aboard the civilian ships? It just doesn't make sense to me.

How does it not make sense? They are allowed to ask questions, etc. Besides, I believe in Season 2, a newspaper is shown and is based on the Colony- I'm sure that each Colony has there own newspaper or media source.
