DirecTV Hughes Series 2 and Dolby Digital output

Question about Dolby Digital output:

I have a DirecTV Hughes Series 2 SD-DVR40, and I recently added an optical digital output cable to my A/V receiver (Onkyo TX-DS595which supports DTS/Dolby Digital) to theoretically enhance the sound quality.

I changed the audio output setting on the TIVO to Dolby Digital, but the input signal is being read by my receiver as PCM/Dolby Pro Logic II, which makes me think the signal is not true Dolby Digital.

Also, should I be seeing the Dolby Digital logo on the channel banner, as the manual indicates? Because I'm not.

Am I missing a step somewhere on setting the audio output?

Let's use NBC's Olympics coverage as an example.

Is true 5.1 surround only with hi-def? My setup is currently SD.

If you're looking for 5.1, I'm fairly positive the only 5.1 you'll get on SD programming would be on HBO/Showtime/etc. IIRC, the Olympics through a DirecTV NBC local would just be 2.0 or PCM.

Yes, much of the HD programming would be 5.1.

No, your not. Your receiver should recognize DD content when it sees this content and switch. When the signal (program) you are watching is not DD encoded, it is normal to see the PCM/Dolby Pro Logic II on the display. Try swithching HBO or Showtime channels and you will see a few that are broadcasting in DD and you should see your display change.
