Recommend a Godzilla film

So I just watched "Godzilla" with my 4 year old daughter last night. She really liked the parts when Godzilla was stomping stuff up, but couldn't care less about the rest of the plot. So I know there's a slew of Godzilla films where there's more destruction and more monsters. Anyone care to recommend some?

And for the record, "Destroy All Monsters" is already on the list.

Thanks.

Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla 2 1993 version is really good
Godzilla vs space godzilla is pretty fun
Godzilla vs Destroyah
Godzilla Tokyo S.O.S.
Godzilla 2000
Godzilla Vs Mechagodzilla (newest one)

As a kid I loved Son of Godzilla (tons of monsters in this one and story is one kids will find fun)

Thanks for the recommendation! Are these available on DVD?

Is "Son of Godzilla" the one on Monster Island with the giant ants and the little Godzilla (I would assume that it has the little Godzilla at least, given the name).

Gozilla Final Wars. It's the latest one, and includes a LOT of the classic monsters mashing it up.

It makes my heart swell to see you're passing on the love of God to the next generation. I loved those movies when I was a kid. If your daughter liked the first one (we're talking the US cut of the 1954 movie, with Raymond Burr right?), she'll probably like them all, since the first one is probably the lightest on actual city-stomping. You've already got some good suggestions. I also recommend the 2001 "Godzilla, Mothra, and Ghidrah: Giant Monsters All Out Attack" (great title! ) -- very colorful and action-packed.

Seeing as my five-year-old is obsessive about the big green guy, I've had to sit through all of them repeatedly.

Ones he comes back to time and time again:

Godzilla (1998 Matthew Broderick flick) - my son calls it "Godzilla One Eye" because of the poster
Son of Godzilla
Godzilla v. King Ghidora (1993 or so)
Godzilla v. Mechagodzilla II
Giant Monsters All Out Attack
King Kong v. Godzilla

And the favorite for both of my kids:

Godzilla 2000

Ones you'll probably want to avoid:

Godzilla v. Hedorah (aka the Smog Monster)
Final Wars (I liked but both kids hated)
Godzilla v. the Sea Monster

My 4 year old son (will be 5 in May) started watching Godzilla at 1 - that must really make you cry like a baby. :-)

We both enjoy some of the later movies - that reminds me that I need to pick up Final War.

Final Wars is great but there is too many people moments and not enough monster moments.

Destroy All Monsters is the ultimate Godzilla flick

Agree with the above poster, but think you should get Final Wars and jump to all of the scenes of Big G stomping the other monsters and them flattening everything as opposed to sitting through the Matrix wannabe plot of the humans.

I always liked Godzilla 1985. No other monsters besides Godzilla but he is in a good amount and not that much extra human scenes other them dealing with him. (no side plots)

Godzilla vs. King Ghidora was a blast, plus G vs. Mothra (the early 90's version) is on the flipside!

I would love to see a version of that King Ghidora movie that isn't dubbed. It's amazing how some G movies actually get better once you remove the dubbing aspect.

I would stay away from Godzilla vs. Biollante. Definately not the best one out there.

Godzilla is at his BEST when he's a hardcore destructive force of nature who kills and destroys. NOT when he's saving little kids, speaking to other monsters, or god forbid...dancing a jig.

Great examples of the Hardcore Godzilla:

G '54
Godzilla '85
Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidrah: Giant Monsters All Out Attack (G shows no mercy in this one Lotsa G fans were offended by Godzilla's hardcore persona in this one. wussies... )

For sheer joy in viewing, it's hard to beat Ghidrah the Three Headed Monster. It features what could arguably be Toho's top four kaiju: Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra (the larva at least, but she comes with the fairies) and of course the golden dragon. Not to mention Toho's other top four: Honda, Tanaka, Tsuburaya and Ifukube.

Definitely a pivotal movie for Godzilla, we see the first signs of him fighting the good fight. The scene that brings about this change is worth the price of admission: Mothra pleads with Godzilla and Rodan to join forces and fight Ghidrah, while the twin fairies translate for the humans. Priceless.

Ghidrah will be available in September from Classic Media.

You know, I liked this one. It was weird and creepy. I loved the dark way they filmed it and the Diretctor showed real balls by going against the G-norm if you will.

Japanese Godzilla Movies

Are there any fairly recent Japanese Godzilla movies worth seeing ?

I don't expect the level of FX of the hollywood versions but something watchable

Any suggestions ?

Re: Japanese Godzilla Movies

I thought Godzilla 2000 was pretty strong, and that would probably be my recommendation to get into the series.

Re: Japanese Godzilla Movies

The last couple of films in the "Millennium Series" were pretty good IMO. Especially "Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack" (or just "GMK") which returns Godzilla to his Bad Guy origins.

"Godzilla X Mechagodzilla" and "Godzilla X Mothra X Mechagodzilla: Tokyo SOS" were good too.

Re: Japanese Godzilla Movies

Tokyo SOS and GMK were badass. The others are alright but the millennium series was very up and down in quality. Always neat as all of the G movies are but it didn't know wtf to do. Wasn't G rebooted 3 times in that series?

Re: Japanese Godzilla Movies

Most of the movies in the "Millennium Series" were set in different "universes." Each had the same starting point - Godzilla attacked Tokyo in 1954. From there, each film maker was allowed to create their own history for their particular movie. "Tokyo SOS" was the only one that broke the rule by being a sequel to "Godzilla X Mechagodzilla."
