Good and bad news for fans of "The Office"

An additional episode(bringing the total to 22) is definitely a good thing, but the thought of having to wait an extra month and a half to see the remaining Season 2 episodes really sucks. Oh well, the important thing is that this is a vote of confidence for the show on NBC's part.

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - CBS announced a flurry of midseason changes to its schedule Wednesday.

The eye network is giving "The New Adventures of Old Christine" the Monday 9:30 p.m. slot after "Two and a Half Men" beginning March 13. "Christine," which stars Julia-Louis Dreyfus, will mark the third sitcom in that slot this season, following "Out of Practice" and "Courting Alex."

Beginning March 22, those two sitcoms will move to Wednesday from 8-9 p.m., replacing the pairing of "Yes, Dear" and "Still Standing." Neither of those series is being yanked early; both will have fulfilled their episode orders for the season.

Also new to the CBS schedule is the drama "The Unit," which starts Tuesdays at 9 p.m. beginning March 7.

On Tuesday, NBC declared its intent to keep the lights on at "The Office" through the rest of the season. The peacock reconsidered its intent to end the sitcom's current season March 30, scheduling the season finale for May 11.

The sitcom will stay in its Thursday 9:30 p.m. perch through May mostly in the form of repeats, but an additional original episode also will be scheduled, bringing its episode order for the season to 22.

NBC also announced a return date for former Thursday sitcom "Joey," which left the schedule in the midseason amid ratings struggles. "Joey" will return with original episodes at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 7, in place of "Fear Factor," which will come back in the summer.

NBC will double-pump repeats of "Joey" at 8:30 as well until March 21, when repeats of "Scrubs" will take over the slot. That move will lead to a double run of "Scrubs" from 8:30-9:30 p.m., instead of its usual 9-10 p.m. block, in order to make room for the premiere of new sitcom "Teachers" at 9:30 p.m.

"Teachers" originally was scheduled to premiere in that slot April 6, but will now jump in a week earlier on March 28.

NBC has been heartened by the performance of "The Office" since switching it from Tuesdays to Thursdays last month. Its ratings in the 18-49 demographic have improved 27 percent since the move, as has its audience retention rate coming out of "My Name Is Earl," up to 90 percent on Thursdays from 71 percent on Tuesdays.

"Office" was scheduled to come to an early end in order to accommodate the film career of its star, Steve Carell, who is scheduled to start shooting theatrical comedy "Evan Almighty," co-starring Morgan Freeman, in the spring.

This just goes to show how ridiculous the reports were that NBC was ending the season for The Office in March because Carrell would be shooting a film. I resent the way the current regime attempts to insult the intelligence of its potential viewers by suggesting that the programming moves they make are dictated by the films actors take on as side work. They did it with Scrubs, and they did it with The Office until they changed their mind.

We're not idiots NBC. Don't treat us as though we are.

From what I read in the article, they are giving us one more original episode, but that the rest will be repeats. He probably still has the same shooting schedule or maybe they delayed it a couple of weeks to allow for the one original episode.

The point is that NBC got the number of episodes they ordered. In fact, now they're getting an extra one. NBC is the company responsible for running through the order so early. It has absolutely nothing to do with anything Carrell is shooting.

Well it has been nice, not having repeats of My Name is Earl and The Office for most of 2006.
