DEARBORN, Mich., May 3, 2005 -- What's orange, hairy, loves lasagna and rides in a Volvo S60? The answer is Garfield the cat who, courtesy of a Volvo product placement, rode in style in his movie debut, 2004's "Garfield -- The Movie."
This year will be even bigger for Volvo product placements on the big screen, thanks to the efforts of product placement professionals at International Promotions. The company works behind the scenes to get Volvos into big-budget American movies.
"We look for hip, cool films with major distribution, starring well-known actors," said Debb Smith of International Promotions. "The script must also be well-written, with a placement opportunity that puts Volvo in a positive light."
So far International Promotions has arranged to have Volvos appear in a whole series of films due to be released this year. Probably the biggest recent coup was getting a Volvo S80 into the film "The Weather Man," starring Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage.
"The S80 is featured throughout the entire film," Smith said.
In "The Weather Man," Gage plays a Chicago TV weatherman up for a shot at a national morning television show. Unfortunately, at the same time his personal life is falling apart. The film also stars Michael Caine and Hope Davis.
In 2004's "Garfield -- The Movie," Stars Breckin Meyer and Jennifer Love Hewitt shared screen time with a Volvo S60, parked in the background.
Apart from getting 16 Volvos into the 2003 film "School of Rock," Smith was most pleased with "Garfield -- The Movie. "The live-action stars and the animated Garfield were seen in the vehicle in a multitude of scenes throughout the entire story, resulting in tremendous logo exposure for the brand," she said. "The placement was fully integrated with the storyline."
Along with Hollywood films, Volvos are also appearing in films from other countries. For instance, the upcoming Swedish film "Bang Bang Orangutang," features Lena Olin driving a V50 along with eight V70 police cars.
Besides "The Weather Man," Volvos will also make guest appearances in the following films during 2005:
"Bewitched" starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell (S80)
"The Island" with Scalett Johansson and Ewan McGregor (S80)
"Nadine in Date Land" starring Janeane Garofalo (S80)
"The Fountain" featuring Hugh Jackman (S80)
"The Shaggy Dog" starring Kristin Davis (XC90)
"The Bad News Bears" with Marica Gay Harden (XC90)
"Four Brothers" starring Mark Wahlberg (XC90)
"Sky High" featuring Kurt Russell and Kelly Preston (XC70)
"Zathura" starring Tim Robbins (XC70)
"Bee Season" with Richard Gere (XC70)
"Hide and Seek" starring Robert de Niro (V70)
"Prime" featuring Meryl Streep (V70)
"Must Love Dogs" starring Dermot Mulroney and Diane Lane (C70)

Wow, I didn't know that spending 15 seconds on google could answer questions like that. The next time I have a simple question, instead of posting on a message board and asking, I might use google instead. Thank you Mr. Pusser.
