Buyer Beware: Confusion over Best Buy's X-files deal

It looks like another week where Best Buy flyers are wrong or misleading.
I went into the store today, and they had the signs out for X-files season 1, 2, 3 at $34.99 and take $30 dollars off when you buy all 3 seasons. I looked at the sign carefully, and it said nothing about the sale being effective on 1/31. However, the sets were the thick ones marked at $41.99.

Sure enough, the register rang up the sets at $41.99. I showed the clerk the ad, and their solution was to take $10 dollars off each set to ring them up at $31.99. I didn't think that was right. The ad sounds to me like you get $34.99 then $10.00 off which makes it $24.99 a set.

I went to dispute the charges at customer service. The clerk told me that I actually got the sets cheaper than I should have. The $34.99 is the sale price after the $30.00 discount. I told him that I still didn't think that was right, and walked away.

I am going back on Tuesday and see if I get a different answer. I suspect their computers will be updated with the new price, but it is really their fault for putting the sale signs out with the older sets.

The web site shows that 1,2,3 are 34.99 and if you buy all three then they become 24.99 per set. Obviously the clerk you dealt with was an idiot but technically the sets are not released until 1/31 and those are the sets that are on sale.

IIRC though the ad mentions something specifically about the smaller/slim set so the sets you were trying to buy were not the ones on sale.

Edit, here's the wording: "Each season comes in a 6-disc set and a new slimmer package. " Addtionally the ad on the website says "Limit 3 of each new DVD release per customer. No dealers, please. New release offers begin Tuesday."

Does that mean if I buy season 1, 2 and 3, that's my 3 limit, or 3 copies of 1,2, and 3? Personally, I think Best Buy should honor the ad because they put the sale sign up early right under the thick sets. The sign even said effective 1/29.

Now if was under the thick sets on the shelves then you may have a point. According to everything in the add though, including the fact it is plainly listed under "New Release DVD sets" (and new releases always come out on Tues), those are not the sets that are on sale. Personally I don't think it's really worth getting worked up over and just wait until Tues and pick up the new/slimmer set.

Does that mean if I buy season 1, 2 and 3, that's my 3 limit, or 3 copies of 1,2, and 3?
I believe it's 3 copies of each and I'm pretty sure it applies to all new DVD releases not just the X-Files sets.

These are clearly in a section marked New release DVD sets in the ad. At the top of the page it is noted: NEW RELEASES Available Tuesday, January 31.

Nope. The offer is only for the X-Files sets.

EDIT: I'm talking about the special SAVE $15 or $30 offer. I mis-read your post. Sorry.

What offer? I think the 3 copy limitation (in answer to the question) is a general rule that applies to any/all new DVD releases.

this is only on the new X-Files set. I have no idea if there is any difference in content between the two sets. But season 1,2,3 are re-released on Tuesday with new packaging and sku numbers. It should work then.

The ad isn't incorrect at all. The sale is on the new sets releasing on Tuesday, not the old sets.

I feel that this is a case of "natural selection" at work.

Yea, but according to the BB employee, the $34.99 includes the $30 dollar discount. The ad clearly says to me that I should get the sets at $34.99 plus a $30 dollar discount.

I told him, well that doesn't make sense because it says you get $15 off if you buy two. His reply was that in that case, it would ring up at 38 a set or something like that. Obviously, the guy was clueless.

Both of you were clueless and it sounds like neither of you read the ad. Wait two days and try to buy the correct versions and all of your problems will go away.

Sounds like the problem was with the in-store display showing the "sale" price early.

Should be interesting to see what happens come Tuesday, after the royal disaster that happened last week with Enterprise.

Does anyone know if there's any content differences between the original sets and the new slim-pkg sets?

No content difference between the old sets and the new sets, so why would you even want the older "thickburgers" when you could have the new slimlines???

*Instantly, when you buy all 3. Each season comes in a 6-disc set and a new slimmer package. Must be purchased on same receipt.
**Instantly, when you buy any 2. Each season comes in a 6-disc set and a new slimmer package. Must be purchased on same receipt.
***Date subject to change. Limit 3 of each new DVD release per customer. No dealers, please. New release offers begin Tuesday.
When you buy all 3 you save $30 instantly making it $24.99 each.

It describes the sale as for the new slim ones and not the old ones.

Limit 3 of each release means that Season 1 is a seperate entity and release that Season 2. This would mean that you could only buy 3 of each season.

I don't see what's hard to understand if you just read. I second the nomination for natural selection.

Let's not dogpile on the OP. It was a simple misunderstanding.

My recommendation: go in tomorrow, return the old sets, and buy the new sets at the sale price.

I don't know if the BB ad is wrong or if the sets have been changed, but the first four seasons of The X-Files had 7 discs (the 7th usually had all the bonus features). This ad is stating these "new" sets only have 6 discs.

EDIT: The ad must be wrong, as the website lists the set as having 7 discs.

Disregard my post above...it looks like they have indeed dropped the extras discs from the new sets. If you can get the older sets at the same price then jump all over it if you want the extras.
