I just got finished selling the lot of my stack of 4,000 cds (I am poor plus I am trying to go all vinyl) but I couldn't sell the first 3 cds I owned.

1. The Smithereens - Especially for You
Still one of my favorite albums, a personal top 10 for sure.

2. Toad the Wet Sprocket - Fear
I think they are still the kings of adult alternative and this holds up pretty well still.

3. 10,000 Maniacs - Out Time in Eden
I was actually thinking about turning this thread into a 10,000 Maniac appreciation threat at first but would rather see what other people's first albums were.

All three were bought by my mother when she got me my first cd player. The first two have held up extremely well, moreso the Aerosmith. The sound effects one got used twice and given away.

Edit: Thought I would mention that these are my first cd's. I can't remember the first "albums" that I owned. It was hard enough to remember these three.

I got the Vinyl when I was very young, and I don't own any of those albumns on CD (and never did on tape). With the exception of Weird Al, I re-bought most of my cassette music on CD. Those three CDs I still have, but don't listen to them much. The music was already classic when I was listening to it regularly, and will probably remain so.

Don't want to take it too off topic, but it is interesting to compare the first 3 CD's I bought (listed above) to the last 3:

I got all three at the same time on cassette. Don't remember if it was a special occasion or what. I've repurchased Thriller on CD, listened to She's So Unusual on Yahoo-To-Go a few times recently, and haven't listened to Eliminator lately - but have listened to their box set some this year.

It was so long ago, I can't remember the first "albums" I bought (started with vinyl in the early 1970's... still have every LP I bought though-over 400), one of the earliest though was "Elvis Live at Madison Square Garden". I do remember the first two CD's I bought however, at the same time I bought my first CD player in 1984 from Sears... The Police "Synchronicity" and Madonna "Like a Virgin"... still have those also. Heck, still have the first CD player, even though it no longer works, a Sears "Proformance" brand, that weighs around 20 pounds, no remote, 16 red LED lights to indicate track playing (over that, it stayed at 16), a big heat sink sticking out the back, and a warning sticker on the side saying not to open the case, because of "intense laser radiation".

RUSH:POWER WINDOWS. After I bought my 1st cd player I traded in the vinyl version for the cd version. I knew RUSH would be the perfect band for CD because of their sound.

Out of all those I still listen to RUSH:POWER WINDOWS regularly so I guess it still stands up for me.

I bought a bunch of tapes when I got a boombox at about age 11:

Miami Vice Soundtrack: actually better than you'd think. Has a great Glen Frey song "Smuggler's Blues" and Phil Collin's classic "In the Air Tonight" and even a Grandmaster melle Mel song.

Police "Synchronicity": still an excellent album, just wish they'd left "Mother" off of it...

Michael Jackson: "Thriller": this was about 1985 so this album was completely unavoidable. Still a classic, IMO.

Ace Frehley solo album (the only prerecorded 8 track I bought. Oddly enough, I bought the other KISS solo albums on vinyl at the time. Don't know what I was thinking when I changed formats with Ace )

These are the two that I remember most distinctly. Eventually I got Nevermind, Ten Achtung Baby and Waking Up the Neighbours ( ) and a bunch of other ones on tape.

My first CD I still remember very well: Breeders - Pod. I hated it at first but it grew on me. That's the one that holds up best out of all the early purchases.

I grew up in a very conservative, religious household and most anything I wanted to buy was subjected to extreme scrutiny. I kept the Stone Temple Pilots hidden and the rest met with parental approval. Of those 6, there really aren't any I still listen to regularly. Every once in a while I'll pop in Core. I still listen to The Beatles and The Cars, but not either of those discs.
