It's out of print and sealed and someone really wanted it, I guess.

Easy answer. A classic case of a stubborn buyer up against a shill-bidding seller.

noitch0q8g (11) US $200.00 Dec-25-05 18:06:39
noitch0q8g (11) US $195.00 Dec-25-05 18:06:21
noitch0q8g (11) US $187.00 Dec-25-05 18:04:37
noitch0q8g (11) US $180.00 Dec-25-05 18:03:57
noitch0q8g (11) US $170.00 Dec-25-05 12:56:09
noitch0q8g (11) US $160.00 Dec-25-05 11:39:41
noitch0q8g (11) US $150.00 Dec-25-05 11:38:32
noitch0q8g (11) US $140.00 Dec-25-05 11:38:10
noitch0q8g (11) US $130.00 Dec-25-05 03:08:51
noitch0q8g (11) US $120.00 Dec-25-05 00:02:59
noitch0q8g (11) US $110.00 Dec-24-05 23:53:59
noitch0q8g (11) US $100.00 Dec-24-05 20:45:46
noitch0q8g (11) US $90.00 Dec-24-05 20:45:22
noitch0q8g (11) US $85.00 Dec-24-05 20:44:39
noitch0q8g (11) US $80.00 Dec-24-05 20:44:08
noitch0q8g (11) US $75.00 Dec-24-05 11:11:23

They couldn't have been more obvious about it. Shill bidding is agaisnt eBay rules, but I can't blame the seller. The seller pumped up the price of the item against an obviously ignorant buyer. In the words of Canada Bill Jones, it's immoral to let a sucker keep his money. And so the cookie crumbles.

Shill bidding, though, is the answer to your question.

How closely does eBay monitor that?

they monitor it pretty close, I had a friend have his roomate do it for him, and it only worked once before ebay suspended them both no questions asked.
If you look, the losing bidder bought another Rebecca on the 29th for $100 from another buyer, it may not have been a shill bidder even though it looks like it.

I don't really see any evidence of shill bidding.

noitch0q8g really wanted this DVD and bid a maximum of $200. patricia-48 came along bidding in $5-10 increments until she went over noitch0q8g's max. A few days later noitch0q8g bid on another copy and won it for $100. Looks legitimate to me.

Sorry, but...

Only actual bids (not automatic bids generated up to a bidder's maximum) are shown
Taken from eBay's website...which means that patricia-48 didn't bid multiple times, noitech0q8g did. Patricia only made four bids on the item ($68.98, $128.98, $157.98, and the final, winning bid of $202.50). Noitech, the losing bidder, was the one that made numerous small bids pushing the price of the auction up a little bit at a time. The fact that he got a positive feedback for another Rebecca Criterion potentially disproves my theory of shill bidding...but I still find it odd that anybody would bid in $10 intervals, a total of sixteen times, up to twice the normal selling price of an item. That's not to say that I'm right, and perhaps I'm just pessimistic...but I still think it was a case of shill bidding. That type of activity just doesn't seem to happen otherwise. It doesn't need to. In fact, he only placed two bids on the item that he won, bids of $85 and $100.

That's not to say that I'm not right in my assumption, though...it very well could just be a case of my skeptical nature getting the best of me. Either way, though, I feel in my "glass is half empty" heart that it was a case of deceptive bidding practices on eBay. There's no other logical explanation, in my opinion, for somebody to bid 16 times on an item that ended up selling for twice the normal going price.

Think of this though. Guys has a copy of the CC. He sells it, pushing the bid to 200. He then buys one for 100 a few days later to throw off suspicion so the total = Shill seller has a copy of same movie + 100 dollars for doing nothing. He just made 100 dollars for not doing anything except bidding on his own auction.

I few days ago I was watching an auction for another sealed Criterion edition of Rebecca and the winning bidder was noitch0q8g, the same guy who sent that Rebecca criterion in the 200 dollar range.

Amazing that nobody in this thread has noticed that.

Bidding with no intention to win... used to drive the price up. NBK's post #10 gives a nice example.

Exactly. If the guy bidding on the $200 copy really is a friend of, or alternate account of, the seller...the actual $100 winning bid could very well be for a replacement for the one that he just sold. Like you say, $100 in his pocket, and he still has a copy of "Rebecca." It's walking like a duck and talking like a duck, so I still say that the logical explanation for that bidding pattern and final closing price is shilling, not coincidence.

I think it could be a case of shill bidding as well. Maybe eBay should investigate this auction.

Sure it will. In fact, I'll do the shill bidding for you. All I want is 10%.

So the $23.99 I paid at Best Buy 6 months after release was a real bargin. I recall when the release was announced, that the license held by Criterion was for a limited time. So as soon as I could get the best price I pounced on it. The same thing happened to Notorious and Straw Dogs but copies of both of those can be found for $40 or less so their not nearly as scarce as Rebecca.

As a veteran Ebayer of (mostly) highly collectible and often expensive items of various genres, I can attest that indeed there is a considerable amount of shilling on Ebay. Regardless of whether Ebay forbids it or not, unscrupulous sellers find a way around Ebay's 'watchful' eye, and generally without very much apparent effort. All it takes is one 'new' bidder - with no previous transaction history - and who's to say that they're not legitimate?

The dead giveaway is usually when said new bidder keeps putting in many small increment bids up to just over the current high bid, as opposed to one large bid to 'guarantee' winning a desired item (which is how most serious bidders would proceed), particularly when there are several other auctions of the same item going on at the same time and said bidder has no interest in any of those.

Experienced bidders can usually sniff out these kinds of scams. I usually drop out of an auction as close to the end of it as I can manage when I suspect this sort of thing to burn the seller, and (surprise!) often find that the current high bid is suddenly withdrawn or the item goes back up for auction again by the same seller soon after the first auction ends. I've even had sellers contact me after the auction ended to say that the winning bid was "a non-payer" or an "accidental bid" and offering to sell me the item at my last bid price.

Except, of course, in the case of inexperienced or naive bidders. I mean, when I made my first few bids on Ebay, I wasn't entirely sure how the system worked, so I went about bidding rather stupidly. So it could just be a case of a particularly un-savvy bidder.

You'd think, however, that by the time a bidder had 11 feedbacks he/she would be experienced enough to know better. So I just don't know....

Clearly and obviously a shill. Completed auctions for the same title were running between $75-$100. $202 is just way too out there.
If anyone was unsavvy, it was patricia-48. Proxy bidding $202 early in the auction is just begging to be shilled. One look at the bidding history at the time she re-bid should've told her that. That is one of the reasons why sniping is the only way to go.

Hello all,
I am the seller of this item and a dvd talker...funny that you guys are discussing my auction but anyway...

There was NO shill bidding just a couple of motivated buyers, I was as suprised as you were to get that much for the DVD. But guess what, occasionally there are abberations in price and as with any auction the price is what the buyer happens to be willing to pay at the time. The buyer was willing to pay and I was willing to sell, end of story.

I think some of you guys are just a bit paranoid and more than a bit nosy, I don't appreciate being accused of running a scam in any kind of public forum especially when you have no evidence of it.

Oh well, I'm gonna go back to watching Buffy. Have a great day!
