I have never watched the new Doctor Who ( 2005 )

In fact ... I have never watched the old one too.

Anyway ... I will probably buy it ...

But first I need some opinions.

Is the New Doctor Who a good blind buy ?

if you like good well written sci fi and fantasy that doesn't take itself too seriously (like Farscape / Buffy / Stargate) I'm sure you will love it. It's very British, in a (kind of) Harry Potter sort of way but without the annoying kids. I think what I like most about Doctor Who is how open ended it is, The Doctor's spaceship can go anyplace and anytime, so one episode The Doctor might be in the far future on some planet battling weird aliens and the next episode he'll be in the 16th century investigating ghosts. Also, one episode might be fun and silly and the next might dark serious sci fi.

I was a fan of the old series and I didn't think I would like a new Doctor Who with a big budget as a part of the charm of the old series was the low budget cheap effects even tho the stories themselves were very well written sci fi. I was so afraid they would "Phantom Menace" it... but that didn't happen at all, they kept the same magic and feel of the old series yet updated it for 2005. It's also set in the same "Doctor Who" universe as the old series, it's not a remake or a re-imagining, yet at the same time you don't have to know anything about the old series to jump into the new series and enjoy it. It's not loaded down with continuity. I couldn't be happier with the new Doctor Who series, IMO it's one of the best sci fi TV series of all time.

What kind of shows do you like? I wouldn't recommend anything as a blind buy unless I have some sense as to whether or not someone might like it.

Turborobb summe dit up pretty well. It's a good series if you enjoy an SF series that doesn't take itself too seriously. It does a good job introducing new viewers to the universe, but since the Producer is a fan, it's careful not to contradict the old series either, so if you decide to go back and watch the old series, you'll be pretty well grounded in Who-lore.

It's a good starting point for anyone who wants to get into Doctor Who as it really does a good job at introducing and letting you into the world of the doctor.

I would highly recommend it on the simple fact that Christopher Eccleston is fuck'n awsome.

I'm a fan of the original and the new series, but I'm hesitant to recommend it as a blind buy. DW isn't really everyone's cup of tea and the set is too pricey to take a chance on.

I thought it was good. I've never been a big Doctor Who fan, but I enjoyed the new series so much that it has convinced me to go back and watch some of the older episodes (got City of Death and Mind Robber for Christmas).

The price is hugely expensive for what you get. Unless money is no object, I would say to rent the first disc first, see if you like it.

I'm not a fan of the old Dr. Who, but I did fall in love with the new Dr. Who when a friend of mine got ahold of a copy from the Legion of Rassilon and showed it at his Friday Night Spookfest.

It is a very well written and acted series. Both fun and sci-fi which should cater to almost anyone. My non-sci-fi loving fiance loved Dr. Who....wish the season was longer tho!

I am a fan of the new series (though I have some reservations about it), but like wmansir said, it's a bit on the pricey side for a blind buy. If it were priced closer to most American TV show box sets (under $50 range), I'd say go for it, but it is rather expensive for 13 episodes. I suggest renting/downloading some episodes first.

My opinions mirror his. I watched the older show when I was in High School. It was on real late at night on a PBS station so I would stay up until 2:00 watching these shows. True, the old show had bad effects but the stories were always interesting.
I was throughly engrossed with the new Who because it kept the flavor of the original but updated with better characterizations it and the effects have been upgraded too.
Give it a shot.

Good blind buy? At a MSRP under $50, yes. At it's current $100 MSRP, no.

I would rent the first disc.

I loved the new series and I'm still not paying that kind of money for the boxset.
