Progressive scan DVD players - how can you tell?

I've been reading about the benefits of progressive scan on dvd players. However, I'm confused about one thing. While many of the latest players have "progressive scan" written on the player or listed as a feature, many players do not. But even for the players that do not say progressive scan, they still have the component (y, cb, cr) inputs in the back. Does the player need to actually say or list "progressive scan" or does any player that has the component inputs on the machine possess the progressive scan capability? Thank you.

Having component outputs does not guarantee that the player provides progressive output. The only way to know for sure is if progressive output is listed as a feature of the player. That being said it does seem like every major brand is including progressive output in all but their most inexpensive players so you can almost say its now a standard feature.

Component outputs does not mean the player is progressive scan...in fact, my old Toshiba SD-2109 had component outputs but no Progressive Scan feature. On most players (if not all), you have the option of turning the progressive scan on/off.

Excellent! I'm glad I checked with you guys. I asked store people in Circuit City, Best Buy and PC Richard and they all felt that any player that had the inputs were automatically progressive scan capable. So much for reply on the sales reps. Thanks again.

Retail sales people are by definition clueless.

FYI, DVD players have outputs, not inputs. The video signal goes out from the DVD player to the TV, not the other way around.
