The Island (Sound Problem?) - Canada
My friend works at a DVD store and he get's shipments of movies about two weeks before they are released. He got his shipment of The Island and bought a copy for himself (two weeks before release). He said that although it is advertised as 5.1, it's actually only 2 channel. He took it back and grabbed another copy to verify this and again it was 2 channel. He has since contacted Universal and they deny any problems.

As it is, what employee would have admitted they received a film before street date to the distributor? That's a good way to make sure your business doesn't receive its DVDs until the release Tuesday...

I found this image of the back of the box for the Canadian release, and it appears to show that 5.1 is present for both the English and French audio tracks:

This is majorly confusing right now. I found this thread on another forum, and it suggest problems with copies coming from a company. Are the Canadian releases screwed up? http://www.avforums.com/forums/showt...=274039&page=2

From the Amazon.com reviews:

hi, I have just purchased the canadian edition of The Island. Though I hate when the Canadian package bears the title in French in addition to the original title,it normally does not matter as most editors like Universal, Dreamworks or Paramount do not bother to translate the artwork and the content of the disc itself. Anyway, in the case of the Island, the back of the package specifies that the feature is offered with 5.1 English with optional English, Spanish and French subtitles + 5.1 French.
BUT (VERY BIG « BUT ») it turns out that the set-up screen on the dvd mentions French 5.1 and English 2.0 !!! And this is no typing mistake, the English is really only available in 2.0 !!
Before buying this dvd again, from amazon.com this time, I would like to make sure that the US version offers a 5.1 English track.
If the US version is released with 2.0 English, I will consider this the biggest editorial incident of the year.

Shit, I am thinking that the English audio may have been screwed up on both the Canadian and U.S. releases. A while back I noticed that Amazon.ca was showing that "The Island" was no longer available. Now I see that it shows as "Currently Unavailable" on dvdempire as well. I smell a recall.

screw it. I'm not getting the disc today. No time for the hassle of having to return it during the Christmas rush if this is indeed true. This will be my first excuse to wait for the inevitable deluxe edition down the road.

This is from Digital Bits and it seems that the Canadian release is indeed missing the 5.1 English track.

We've gotten wind from our north-of-the-border readers that DreamWorks' DVD release of The Island (distributed by Universal) up in Canada is missing its English Dolby Digital 5.1 track. The packaging says the disc includes both English and French 5.1 audio, but when you actually play the disc, only French 5.1 and English 2.0 audio is available. Strike ONE for shoddy QC.

I was probably going to hold out for a more "deluxe" release, now I'm certainly glad I did...hell, I was pissed off when this was announced without DTS, let alone no 5.1 mix!!!!!! Unbelieveable.

Returned my copy back to Best Buy last night and explained to them what the problem is in case others say the same problem. Received a refund without any trouble
Waiting for Universal to announce a 1-800 number for consumers to call for an exchange, but since we're in the Christmas season - I'm guessing early 2006?

This is courtesy of the Digital Bits in regards to the replacement program from Universal for the Canadian discs...
In the meantime, we've got a couple of bits of Universal-related news. First, a follow up on that problem with the Canadian release of The Island missing its English Dolby Digital 5.1 track. Here's the message that Canadian customers have been receiving via e-mail upon registering their complaints about the disc with the studio:
"Thank you very much for your email. We are aware of the current issue with The Island DVD, and are offering replacements. If you wish to receive a replacement please provide your full name and mailing address and a prepaid envelope will be sent to you ASAP. Please use this prepaid envelope to return only the disc (not packaging). Replacement discs are scheduled to be available in late February/March 2006, at which time we will be send you your replacement copy. However, if discs are available sooner we will be sure to advise you. We appreciate your patronage and hope that you will continue to enjoy this and other Universal releases.
