I read Scott Weinberg's DVD review of Mr. & Mrs. Smith at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=19201 and...

As far as I'm aware, the movie is not directly based on the 1996 Scott Bakula TV series, though it does obviously share the same title and a similar concept.
