Arcade Game Challenge #52: They killed his family. Someone's gonna pay.

In these threads we play arcade games that are emulated on PCs, and compete for the highest score.
You have to take care of finding the games yourself.
Click here for the list of all the past winners and high scores.

The Rules:
  1. To enter, you just play one of the games and post a screenshot with your score.
  2. Once all the games have a score, the deadline to post any new scores will be 72 hours after the last screenshot is posted.
  3. The winner can pick any game that we haven't already played for the next thread. Don't forget to pick a new game, or I'll do it for you!
  4. Any games should be played with one credit and no continues or any features not on the actual machine.
  5. If you play and beat any of the high scores from the previous games we've played, you can submit them for the All Time Top Scores.

The Games:

My first choice was actually Spy Hunter, not the Punisher. And I would have beaten your score if I didn't have Jury Duty today and wasn't around a computer

You said your "second choice" was Spy Hunter. But since Balloon Fight has that stupid dual screen thing that I can't figure out how to get rid of, I'll do you a favor and change that one to Spy Hunter.

And if you had beaten my score I would've just beaten yours again.

What I said was:
For my 2nd pick I choose Spyhunter. I would also like to make this my first pick in case I somehow do not win two games.
But I can see how you might have been confused

You expect me to read your entire post? You can't even get out of jury duty.

Let's get this thing moving or over with. These games are going to have the lamest screenshots. I had to record an input file to get one of Strider.

I'm pretty sure it's because of the "artwork"

Keep trying. I still haven't gotten the boat. I keep driving past it.

Well I came in here to post my 36k score and I see you've already beaten it. I haven't seen the boat or if I have I didn't realize what I was supposed to do. It's been a long time since I've played.

Also the controls for this suck with a keyboard. Wish I had a fancy joystick for it.

Yeah, it really helps to have an analog stick to control the speed and steering. I'm using my xbox controller.

I think back when I played it on Retrocade I might have used the mouse with the keyboard. I'm not sure. I'm not going to try to figure it out again when any cheap usb gamepad with an analog stick will work.

There was absolutely no time to get a snap on Strider as soon as you die, and no socre was displayed during the hi-score input screen. I hope this will suffice.

How is that Punisher score even possible? I was just barely able to get past the robot boss using both my lives and ended with 800k. 3x that score seems like I must be missing some basic trick/strategy.

It's better than what devilshalo posted
At least this one you can tell what game it is. A demo screen is better than a high score list.

Well, there are some trick and strategies involved. The trick is: Everything are worth points in this game. Yes, that sounded very obvious. But, the trick is to PICK UP everything that you can possibly get your hands on. This is because at the end of the stage you will be awarded bonus points for every single item that you PICKED UP. So, rather than beating and breaking chairs, potted plants, barrels, crates, robot heads, etc. It would be ideal to pick items up before you destroy them for the contents. Also, every weapon "picked up" is considered as an item for bonus point purposes. So if you just wiped out a group of goons and there are piles of weapons on the floor. You'd probably want to pick up every one of them once for more points. This is true even at the boss area, since you can walk around and pick up things for about 5-7 seconds after the stage boss is defeated. Also, eating the foods while in perfect health is worth a lot of points.

There are too many strategies to mention here for a high score. But the key ones to keep in mind are:

1) Keep moving up/down to avoid incoming attacks. This is probably the single biggest concept to keep in mind in this game or any Final Fight type side-scrolling brawlers.

2) Use the special moves.
a. Sonic/Flash kick - Down, up + attack. Like Guile's kick move in Street Fighter II.
b. Rolling kick - Tap forward twice to roll, hit attack to kick. Very useful for the strategy above.
c. Pile driver - Grab a goon, then jump, down + attack.
d. Leg sweep - Like other Final Fight special attacks, loses life (attack + jump).
e. Giant swing - Loses life, grab a guy then (attack + jump).
f. Grenade - Uses one of them, jump then (attack + jump).
g. Super grenade - Attack + jump. Only usable when you are down to 0% health. Uses a grenade and does BIG DAMAGE.

3) Try to keep all grenades for the bosses. It is possible to kill the bosses in the first four stages (Sculley, Guardroid, Bonebreaker, Bushwacker) without dying more than once. Use all grenades on the boss if necessary before you die, else they goes to waste. I usually don't lose the first life until Bushwacker.

4) You will be awarded a bonus life when the score is around 1 million (can't remember exactly when).

When I used to play this game regularly I can get to end of Stage 5 or even into Last stage on the first credit. This time, I died 40-50% into Stage 5 for that score.

Ah I didn't know about all the moves. I'd figured out the leg sweep (which sucks) and the grenades, but that was it. The grenades don't seem to do too much damage to the bosses either. I used 9 grenades to survive Guardbot. His lasers ruin me (although I guess you can avoid them by being above or below him).

Thanks for the tips, but I doubt I can compete.
