Well, none of those are universal players. I don't think there are any recorders/universal models anywhere. The last one, the Pioneer, does have DVD-A capability. That's the closest you are likely to get right now.

mmmm, maybe Universal isnt the right word. I am looking to play all region dvd's and be able to play PAL discs. Also, I just want a basic dvd recorder all in one machine.

Do the specs on the Panasonic (or others) look good ?

Ah, well universal typically means that it plays DVD-A and SACD. Region-free means that it plays all regions, although some people don't always pay attention to the PAL/NTSC conversion issue so you have to check carefully.

The Pioneer is likely one of the better recorders, but it does not convert PAL/NTSC, which is pretty much standard for Pioneer. Don't see a Panny in your list, but those typically don't convert either, so I doubt it would do what you want if you were to look at any.

The others would all do what you want. Personally, I'd probably stay away from Akai, but I really don't know if the others are any better. I ended up getting a basic Panny DVDR and using a different player for all region needs.
