Pick My DVD Purchase 11/28/05

This isn't really a recomendation thread, more of a discussion of the movies/DVD's I've put in the poll so I posted it in the Talk forum. Hopefully that's ok...

Anyways, I think I'll do this each Tuesday. I'll pick a few New Releases, as well as a few DVD's I have on my wishlist put them all in a poll... and the top pick will be one of the DVD's I pick up this week.

So for this Tuesday we have:

- Frighteners: Director's Cut
- March of the Penguins
- Mr. & Mrs. Smith
- Monty Python & The Holy Grail: Collector's Edition
- Big Fish: Special Edition
- Batman: Special Edition
- Closer: Superbit
- Fargo: Special Edition

I say get The Frighteners as it comes with a free pass to see King Kong in theaters, and the pass expires on 1/1/06

I'm not even sure if that pass will work here? Can you use it at the Empire Cinemas chain?

I think the unrated versions of Gia and Original Sin might be better choices for that information.

Closer is excellent but I would expect in the weeks to come for the disc to be cheaper.

I say Mr & Mrs. Smith. DTS sound, good action....how can you go wrong.

The Frighteners. Easy choice. Great movie and the other top contenders on that list are prime candidates for double dips (Smith, Closer). Outside of those, I'd have to say Big Fish (although, if you have the original release, there is NO need to upgrade).

Also, the KONG ticket should work at Empire chains from what I've heard (although in Canada, the ticket is supposedly a future shop exclusive, so if you have one nearby, make sure to pick it up there)

I think I'm going to go ahead and pick up Mr. and Mrs. Smith myself. Unlike Fantastic Four where the two disc is already complete, I read that the extended collector's edition dvd still has a while until production is complete so at $13.99 at Circuit City next week, you can't beat it.

Of course this is just my opinion, but Monty Python And The Holy Grail blows all those movies out of the water.

Cheapest up here, I think, is $19.99 at Zellers.

I'm surprised so many voted for Mr. & Mrs. Smith considering another extended version is coming down the road (maybe released around their real wedding ).

Unless the OP likes to double-dip, IMO, this is one title to not consider at all.

If you're going to get Closer, check Wal-Mart for that section with the discs with bonus items. You can get it with sex, lies, and videotape for $9.96. I don't know if the WM's have those sections, what the cost would be, or if they even offered those bonuses in Canada though.

Batman.

The Frighteners is a really crappy movie.
March of the Penguins, real good but Batman is better.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith, well there's an extended cut coming I just read.
Big Fish is a colossal failure, despite Ewan McGregor.
Closer is one of my fav movies of last year but it will probably drop.
Fargo is great and it's so cheap, you should buy it with Batman.

Well my dad just got home from a business trip and he picked up Titanic: SE and The Holy Grail: CE for me... so that takes Python out of the running. And with the news that Mr. & Mrs. Smith is going to have an extended cut release, that's out as well. So... I'll probably go with Frighteners: Director's Cut this week, and I may pick up Closer (pre-viewed at BB), or Fargo as well.

Thanks to all that contributed!
