If you had to recommend one of these three Richard Gere films - ONLY one of these three - to someone who has never heard of Richard Gere (you know, the friend you have who lives under a rock), which one would you recommend?

a) Days of Heaven (1978)
b) Bloodbrothers (1978)
c) Yanks (1979)

Once you pick the one you think would be most enjoyable, explain why you didn't choose the other two.

I dunno because, until today, I never heard of those three films. I may have to check out all three.

I have not heard of any of these films. However, I would recommend Primal Fear, because it has the wonderful Ed Norton in it.

Days of Heaven is a breathtakingly beautiful movie.

I don't usually get Buttmunker's threads, and this one is no different. If you were going to introduce someone to Gere, why start with those three titles? Days of Heaven is one of my all-time favorites, but not because of Gere. The other two are lesser films from wildly uneven directors and nowhere near Gere's best work.

I'll third that.

I'll also agree this is a very odd selection.

I didn't pick Bloodbrothers or Yanks because imposing them on friends would be cruel and unusual punishment.

DAYS OF HEAVEN, on the other hand, is the cinematic equivelant of an orgasm.

That's the whole point/challenge of this thread. These movies are NOT definitive works by Richard Gere, but if these were the only titles, and you could ONLY introduce Gere through one of these three particular films, then that's the Pepsi challenge. Uh, Gere Challenge. Or something.

Funny thing is that when I think of Gere I usually think of Rhapsody in August first. How odd is that?

It's like the Pepsi Challenge, only with Shasta, Vernors, and Ale 8 1 as the only competitors.

I voted for Days of Heaven as well, and it has nothing to do with Richard Gere. I am not a fan of Gere at all, but Days of Heaven remains one of my favorite films depsite Gere's presence in the film.
...but pretending this poll has nothing to do with Gere, if anyone has not seen any of the three movies listed....Days of Heaven is the one to see.

That sounds like a game involving a gerbil.

So, I have this friend who doesn't know who Richard Gere is, and I am going to recommend one of these three movies to him/her --and why exactly is that?

"Hey, friend, you know that actor that you've never heard of... Well, here's a 25 year old movie, that he starred in, that most people have never seen or even heard of."

How about instead, I just say: "Y'know, Richard Gere...the rich guy in Pretty Woman."

Yep. I just watched this one a week ago, and then watched it again with the girlfriend. Excellent movie.

I haven't heard of the other three at all.

It's easy to recommend films like Primal Fear, Pretty Woman, An Officer & A Gentleman, and Internal Affairs - even Looking For Mr. Goodbar for Gere's supporting role, but what fun would that be?

So did I.

I'd recommend Days of Heaven because of Terence Malick.

Bloodbrothers is a very good movie, (not available on DVD as yet), and I second the emotion for Primal Fear. This movie had one of the most clever, surprising conclusion that I've ever seen.
