Component to VGA

Can anybody comment on how the component to vga adapters work for projectors and/or pc monitors?

Is there a hard rule on how the digital signal - then analog is converted back into a pixel count?!

My hdtv has a vga input,is there any advantage to using an adapter like that compared to a straight component run? Thanks.

The device that converts component to VGA (or vice versa) is called a transcoder. If your display has a VGA input and your player has a VGA output there really is no benefit to using a transcoder and it will probably degrade the image a bit. (Depending on the set, component input to a display device may allow some additional adjustments to be made in the set, such as color and tint, that can't be made with a VGA input.)

The linked device appears to be just a passive signal converter that allows some devices with a VGA form-factor to handle component input or output. Some video cards will switch into component output when you put a converter like this on them. But it isn't doing the job of a transcoder.

Both VGA and component are analog signals and need to be converted back to digital for display. Depending on the display type, particularly fixed pixel types, a digital signal such as DVI would be the preferred interface. There's no conversion to analog that way.

That's for some additional info. Knew it was analog - wasn't actually looking for digital. Only digital input is DVI, and it isn't HDCP compliant hence the need for component to vga. =)

Shouldn't be. Unless you are out of inputs and want one more component run, AND your TV allows for component over VGA, like X described. If it allows for that, it is simply using fewer of the wires in the VGA connector, and the TV knows that. That's why the TV has to be compatible with this kind of hookup.
