Rome - "Pharsalus" - 10/09

"Pharsalus"
Spoiler:
Marooned in the Adriatic Sea, Vorenus and Pullo look to survive. In Greece, Pompey decides to attack Caesar's depleted forces, whose lack of options turns into their greatest strength. The result finds Pompey seeking reinforcements. In Rome, Octavia is enlisted by Atia to ask another favor of Servilia.

There you go - for all the guys that didn't like all the cock in the episodes some girl on girl action.

Very impressed with this show. Lucius Vorenus is such a badass -the scene with him and the no nose guy was the best. I wouldn't want to get on his bad side.

A raft made out of bloating dead guys, huh?

Looks like somebody's been re-reading their old copy of Watchmen...

Another excellent episode. This is quickly moving up on my favorite HBO shows and the acting is mostly outstanding.

Another solid episode last night. I didn't expect Pompei's demise to happen so soon. Really looking forward to Egypt.

It was worth it for that overhead shot of Octavia flicking the bean. Too bad she didn't bump Brilllos with Niobe.

I love this show, one of the few I anxiously await for the next episode (along with AD, My Name is Earl and Lost). I am so glad they have started giving us longer shows, the 40-45 minute shows were BS.

From the preview
Spoiler:
It looks like they are going Asian and not Greek with Cleopatra

Floating dead guy raft and an on-screen decapitation. That's not TV; it's HBO.

I'm loving the show and all...but...does anyone else think it might be moving a little too fast?

I'm expecting Mussolini to show up about halfway through next season...

I believe that is on purpose. Each episode basically is a snapshot of an important point in the history leading up either what I assume is Caesar's assassination or (if there are multiple seasons) the power struggle and ultimate ascendency of (for those historically challenged)
Spoiler:
*******Octavia*************

The show moving too fast? well the series so far has covered in the actual history 51BC (Julius finished in Gaul) - 48BC (Pompey killed) in Egypt. I am pretty sure they have a whole bunch of Roman history still to cover. There are a lot of other interesting periods to explore both before and after this. I am pretty sure they could make 100 12 episode series and still have plenty of material to cover. The show is called Rome after all and Rome does not mean just Julius Caesar. The problem is people all know Julius Caser and thats what they want to see.

I seem to remember the movie Cleopatra (Taylor and Burton)opening with Caesar chasing Pompey into Egypt and
Spoiler:
being presented with his head upon his arrival
. Am I right, or was that someone else?
My guess is that Octavian will return next season to assume power and be played by a different actor who might be a bit older, of course I have no idea how old he was when he actually took over.
While I can understand why this show might not appeal to everyone (the male nudity really urks me), some of the shots on HDTV make the subscription to HBO worth it. I hope the DVD looks as sharp. In terms of plot, I think it is very well done and flows well, but I can understand why people looking for something like Gladiator would be disappointed. In all honesty, I think the strength of this show is in the adventures of Titus and Vorenus;those actors have good chemistry together and I would love to see them in a modern day movie to see if it translates to another time period.
FWIW, I think Caesar may have made a mistake in being so easy on Brutus after his surrender.

EDIT: Guess it was Pompey!! Just finished the ep. Will keep this one stored for a while.

Another good episode; when Pullo told Vorenus (when they were stranded on the island) to send his regards to his wife as Vorenus was engraving his message on a rock and he answers totally serious " If there is some space left" or something to that effect hehe.

I'm starting to find all the complaints about the male nudity to be really funny. How squeamish can you get?

I like Pullo's reaction to Vorenus stabbing the guy in the neck "A bit harsh isn't it"

Another good episode.

Looking forward to Egypt.

I believe there are 12 to a season, so 5 more.

Titus and Pullo are probably the best part of the show which is surprising because I remember people being nervous about the possibility of them becoming the "Forrest Gumps" of Rome. They are intertwined, but in a completely believable way, and you have to love the interaction between these two guys. I hope I see them get more work.

I thought having Caesar point out how they were involved in the middle of everything so far was a nice touch
