All The King's Men (Sean Penn)

Has anyone else seen the trailer? It looks like it should be good.

I saw the trailer in front of Flightplan over the weekend. Looks like it has potential.

Only reason i will be watching this is because some of it was filmed in the town where i live. Otherwise it's not the type of movie that would interest me.

Always been a fan of the book and story. Penn doesn't look hefty enough to be Stark IMO, but that's because I always equate Stark with Huey Long, and I know I am not supposed to do that.

I think it looks VERY good and has an excellent, top-notch cast. I will definitely be seeing it.

Saw an ad for this during "Nip/Tuck." It looks quite good.

I saw the trailer (it's on the nip/tuck website). All The King's Men is my Favorite book of all-time, and I'm a little dissapointed with what I've seen so far.

I love the casting, great choices. The problem I have is that the story (the book, not the original movie) is about Jack, not Willie. The themes of the book center around good vs evil, as well as action/consequence, whcih Jack doesn't believe in. And has some superb quotes regarding a great many things. The problem is that the movie is a movie, not a book, and we can't hear Jack's thoughts (unless VOed).

My favorite quotes from the book include:

- "If you are an Idealist, it does not matter what you do, or what goes on around you, because it isn't real anyways."

and probably the best quote in the book

- "The end of man is knowledge, but there is one thing he can't know. He can't know whether knowledge will save him or kill him. He will be killed, all right, but he can't know whether he is killed because of knowledge which he has got or because of knowledge which he hasn't got and which if he had it, would save him."

Great book, I recommend it to anyone, we'll see how the moive goes. It may be a great movie, but I don't think anyone will be able to adapt the book it was meant to be.

The trailer looks good, but Penn's acting just isn't selling me. Faking a Southern accent seems like something that British actors do better than American born. IMO, Penn isn't good ol' boy looking enough to be Stark. From the trailer Gandolfini seems more suited for the role, but that's just my opinion.

He did an excellent southern accent in Dead Man Walking.

I think he is just upping it a bit - because of the character which, I have read, is supposed to be that way.

Looks great. You HAD me at Sean Penn, one of the greatest actors of my generation - if not ever.

Bringing this one back up from the dead as it's being released next weekend.

It currently has a 13% on Rotten Tomatoes... sad... considering it's one of my favorite books.

Yeah, this one hasn't been doing so well with critics thus far. I'm going to a screening Thursday evening, so will see for myself (not expecting too much though).

Looked good, but I knew when I saw the previews the accents were off. Fake southern accents when done right can work well in performaces. Done wrong, they can come across as hammy and almost satirical.

I know of some people who refuse to see this because of Penn's politics, but that's a stupid reason to avoid seeing a movie. If it's sitting at 13% at rottentomatoes and getting bashed across the board, that's a good reason!

From the trailer it looks like they're trying too hard for that oscar nom. Or should I say Sean Penn is trying too hard for that Best Actor nom...

Agreed. Considering this was once considered one of the front runners for Oscar and it, along with several others is getting panned, I cannot help but wonder what will be the new ones.

The NY Times said: "Nothing in the movie works", and felt that basically everyone was miscast.

I've read at least three reviews that say the exact same thing.
