TVTalk Draft Game – Draft Thread (All are welcome to play)

I recently completed this game over in the DVDTalk forum. It went very well, so I thought I’d take the game “On the Road” to other forums…beginning with TVTalk.

The idea behind the game is that all the players would act as “Virtual Network Heads” and “Draft” a “Week’s Lineup” of 7 Television seasons (one for each day of the week), and then square off to see who has the programmed the best lineup. By draft, I mean selecting one season of a show at a time to add to your collection in turn (like in sports, or in grade school where captains would pick teams).

Detailed rules:

1. Draft picks are "first come, first serve."

2. After we have a full field of players, rounds will begin every 24 hours at 9am Pacific (excluding weekends). The DVDTalk server clock will be the official timekeeper, so watch your timestamps! Any picks made outside the official time will be ignored. You'll need to repost them within the correct time frame.

3. For each round, players can draft one season of any television show (for example: “Purple Bloomers – Season 6”). Players should also provide a brief description of that season (for example: “This season, Eddie Albert was replaced by Don Adams”). Once a season of a show has been drafted, no further seasons of that show can be selected by that player. Only two seasons of any particular show can be drafted overall.

4. Once everybody has drafted 7 television seasons, we’ll have a bracket tournament. You’ll be randomly paired up, and the forum will vote on who has the better “lineup” of shows from the draft.

5. Restrictions:
a. Regular series only. No mini-series, maxi-series, or made-for-tv movies.
b. The series must have run for at least six episodes (exception: new series that have just started their run)
c. Both current series and classic series are eligible to be drafted.
6. The field will be limited to 32 players.

7. If you miss two rounds in a row, I will replace you with an alternate. Alternates will enter the game in a "first come, first serve" fashion when this occurs, and will "inherit" the existing season.

8. SPECIAL NOTE: This game will take approximately two weeks to play (weekdays only). Please do not sign up if you don’t think you can play the entire time.

9. Draft picks will be tracked in the second post of this thread.

10. After all “lineups” have been drafted, the bracket tourney will begin, and continue for five rounds until we have a grand champion.

11. Good luck, and have fun!

Please let me know if there’s anything you don’t understand.

Strategically, this is suicide, but I cannot in good conscience avoid the single best complete season ever made, even if it isn't that popular.

Babylon 5 - Season 3 "Point of No Return"
Description: This is the season that kicked all kinds of ass. "Messages From Earth", "Point of No Return", "Severed Dreams", "War Without End I & II", "Z'ha'dum"

When the brackets are made up for voting will they include the descriptions? I take it descriptions are going to be optional?

Descriptions are optional, and they will be included, but they have to be very short (a sentence or so).

Lost - Season 1 (Every episode you've seen except for maybe 2 or 3 in the new season!)

As an edit note, do these first picks have to be our Monday shows or can we have an arranging round at some point? There are shows I want to pick first simply because I worry about others claiming them, but at the same time I wouldn't necessarily put a drama on Thursday night. Seems this might not be too difficult if we just post our lineups at the end you could copy and paste them straight from those posts.

Since das beat me to a modern classic, I'll go old school: Star Trek TOS Season 1.

This season included: "City on the Edge of Forever", "Space Seed", "Balance of Terror", and most of the classics everybody remembers.

Descriptions should be objective, and the only purpose should be to distinguish the season from others (and not "pitch" the show). See scott27 and Chew for examples.

These don't have to be Monday shows, they can be from any day of the week. Actually, the week starts on Sunday so I need to fix that second post.

I'm in.

At the risk of going too obvious, I'll take Seinfeld, Season 4. Description to come -- I'll just edit this entry when it is ready.

Description: Jerry and George pitch, cast, and shoot the pilot for Jerry, their show about nothing. Highlight episode: The Contest.

ETA: shorten/enhance description 4:46 PM

My Pick: Chappelle's Show, Season 2

Description: Highlights include Charlie Murphy (Eddie's brother) telling stories about Rick James and Prince, acted out by Chappelle. Wayne Brady also makes a guest star turn, playing against his wholesome stereotype. Outside of Seinfeld, no season of television produced more catchphrases.

(If the last line is too biased, it can be removed.)

Edit: Can Scott and Cleaver both have the Simpsons?

Allright I will play.

I choose

C.S.I. Season 1 - This season marks the beginning or the CSI phenomenon and introduces the characters and the shows unique look at crime drama. This season includes the pilot episode as well as the "Strip Strangler" season finale.

When do we choose another one? When all 32 slots are filled, then we have 24 hours to choose another season. Is that how it works?

I'd like to suggest a list be added up top of shows that cannot be chosen (such as Seinfeld and The Simpsons right now). That may come in handy as we reach the later rounds.
