Mallrats 10th Ani. DVD Problems!!!!

I am just wondering if anyone else has had problems with the shitty flipper disc that they have released for Mallrats 10th Anniversary DVD??? I have had problems all over the disc with the movie and extras stopping all over the place and the pixels scrambling and generally everything just screwed up.

I hate these crap DVDs.....why could'nt they have just released it on 2 seperate DVDs instead. After the excellent Clerks X DVD they went cheap on this. If anyone can let me know if they have had problems because i am taking my copy back first thing tomorrow morning.

My dvd player took forever to load the disc but it seemed to play okay. I have yet to check out all the material though. It's a shame, Universal finally seems to be putting out quality releases, but they are screwing them up with these crappy double sided discs.

"Clerks X" doesn't have all the original features. The deleted scenes are all incorporated into the "Cannes Cut" but not viewable seperately so you lose the audio intros that Kevin Smith recorded. You also lose the intros to the trailer and the music video. The biggest loss of all on "Clerks X" is the original theatrical soundtrack. The remixed 5.1 track has newly-recorded sound effects and the "Happy Scrappy" girl's line is a totally different recording. I believe Smith and Mosier say on the DVD that the "X" DVD actually used the production audio but it's still different. I'd say that the "Clerks X" disc is 95% definitive but I held onto my old disc for that other 5%.

I refuse to buy any of Universals double sided discs. My copy of Orgazmo refused to play the unrated version at all. The Casino extras skipped all over the place. I will buy no more until they get their act together.

I have yet to encounter any playback problems with any of the 2-sided Universal dvds. I've got an Onkyo 6-disc player. I keep reading all of these complaints about these discs, but no one lists what player they are watching them on. That would probably help some.

Smith on the original commentary said that the sound effects for the opening credits, were done days before the film was released theatrically because miramax wanted some sound there. Also regarding the Happy Scrappy girl, on the introduction that smith does on disc one, actually mentions that the woman who is veronica in the movie, redubbed the scene, mosier was in teh process of finishing incorporating the new overdub as they were filming the introduction.

I posted in another thread about this, but mine has major problems. I basically can't watch chapter 14 of the extended cut. Tried it on several players, same problem, taking the disc tomorrow to exchange it.

I've listed my players in a couple of Universal threads and so have several others. I passed on this disc since I was fed up with Universal DVD-18s after my problems with Orgazmo, Columbo Season 3 and Bela Lugosi. I exchanged several times, but never got a working set of either of those three. I ended up returning my Hammer Collection all together.

I have a Sony GX7 and a Sony 725p and those players have had problems with all of the above listed sets and I'm sure Mallrats would be no different.

I lent Columbo Season 3 to my mother in law and she had several freeze ups on her Sharp, but I don't know the model number.

My old 1998 Sony S300 seems to have no problems at all with these Universal DVD-18s. So it seems certain players have a much easier time dealing with them. Maybe certain players can deal with the errors on the discs better than others.

I also listed my Pioneer back in one of the threads. And, like the above poster, have been fed up with Universal for sometime now. I have written complaints with no reply. I stopped purchasing their discs for many months and passed on this Mallrats disc. Sadly, though, Casino is one of my favorite films and I am now on Disc 3 for that film. I also will pick up the next A&C set to complete the collection. I already predict issues.

my jvc didn't have any problems playing the disc (although, for the original ce dvd that first came out, it would freeze on occasion whenever listening to the commentary track.

It doesn't really matter if the theatrical soundtrack was recorded six minutes, six hours, six days or six months before the theatrical release, it's still the theatrical soundtrack. As for Marilyn Ghigliotti recording the "Happy Scrappy" line, she did that on the original theatrical version that is absent from the "X" DVD. They couldn't use the production audio until recently and Ghigliotti's ADR is what you heard prior to the release of "Clerks X". For the current DVD edition, Scott Mosier was able to clean up the little girl's production audio (which is not a "new redub") and use that for the first time within the movie itself as opposed to Ghigliotti's decade-old overdub that we're all familiar with. Smith and Mosier maintain that the new 5.1 soundtrack is more "pure" than the theatrical soundtrack because many sound elements recorded on-set during the film's production were used for the first time in the 5.1 mix but the simple fact of the matter is this: the way everyone heard the film between 1994 and the first half of 2004 cannot be heard on the "Clerks X" DVD. Mosier describes three previous soundtracks: the one on the early cut of the film, that mix with music added and the mix with the foley added. That last one is undoubtedly the most well-known and if you want to hear it you're gonna have to spin your VHS, laserdisc or original DVD.

I got this yesterday. I am severely dissapointed with this release, and Universal in general. Kevin Smith's DVDs have set a pretty high standard for me. Take for example Clerks X... 3 disc set in a nice digipak, with a nice booklet, and a ton of bonus features. Mallrats X, on the other hand, is a flipper, in a single Amaray case with pretty ugly art, with no booklet, and the same bonus featurs as the previous edition, minus a few, and with 4 additional features. I'm very dissapointed in Universal putting out all these flippers recently... Orgazmo, Casino, Blues Brothers, and now Mallrats. Just my two cents...

I had the same problems with the Orgazmo disc on my Samsung player. After going through the process of buying another one, returning my original as a defective copy, the same problems occurred on the new disc. Bought a new pioneer DVD player and it plays the disc perfect. I had similar problems with other discs such as Caligula Unrated and a few others when played on my old Samsung player (it played about 95% of discs error free). No problems on my new one though, I suggest trying the DVD on a different player before concluding that the disc itself is at fault.

I had a couple instances of a 1-second freeze, but when I rewound a few seconds and and watched those areas again, they were fine.

I agree illini420, but you have to take in considerations that most people are not going to go out and buy a new player just to have the opportunity to play 1 disc they paid 15$. I mean I have a Toshiba which I paid around 150$, and it does play 98-99% of my DVDs perfectly, and those new DVDs from Universal will only play perfectly like 50% of the time...there's something wrong with the stuff they're using if major DVD players are having a hard time reading them.

Usual crap from Universal. I'm getting seriously sick of this. We oughta all go stinkpalm them.

I get repeated picture breakup during the Q&A on Side B, so back it goes. Let's see how many I have to get through before I get a good one.

I would just get a refund as the Extended Version is UTTER RUBBISH, but the picture quality is better than the previous Collector's Edition release (less compression, better colour timing and sharper), although it still has some nasty edge enhancement.

If the disc is having trouble in several brands of player it is the disc's fault. There is some kind of manufacturing or authoring problem that is causing this. Some players are obviously able to deal with these Universal discs with no issues, but that doesn't mean there is no fault on the discs. I have played hundreds of DVDs in my Sony and only these Universal DVD-18s are a problem. I have DVD-18s from Warner in Ben Hur and Fox with King of the Hill and those have no errors either.

Universal needs to investigate the cause of this instead of putting out more of these and ignoring consumers. I shouldn't have to buy a new player just because Universal doesn't know how to manufacture DVDs properly.

I have 2 panasonics and a sony player. the Panasonics have the problem. Need to hook up the sony to see if it does it as well. The computer also locked it up when playing the easter eggs on side A.
