Is Mariah Carey really the Best Female Singer ever?

With the most number of No. 1s for a female singer now, Mariah is certainly very very successful. But do you think shes the best singer the pop world has ever had? How else would one explain her inexplicable success though (the longest running No. 1 in music history with 'One Sweet Day', the biggest airplay numbers in music history for 'We Belong Together')? I don't know. I think its probably luck, but I can't think of anyone else who can hit those high notes.

Well, she's no Alyssa Milano, singing-wise.

Well, she is perhaps the most annoying female singer ever.

Yes. Yes, she is.

And as to hitting high notes that (you say) no one else can: so what? Hitting notes that cause ear pain is not the mark of a good singer. There are a number of female singers who (I think) can't hit those notes, but are much better than Mariah Carey. Alison Krauss, for one.

Alison Krauss hitting high notes? Please. Thats like saying Bonnie Raitt does a good latin salsa remix of 'Im A Slave 4 U'. The only person better at high notes than Mariah would probably be some opera star, but thats not really pop music so doesn't count.

Listen to her single 'Emotions'. Its amazing how she does it. And I havent met a soul that didnt love her new one 'We Belong Together'.

If you can't read, there's really no point to this thread.

obviously none of you have heard the names Patti Libellie or Aretha Franklin. Mariah can't hold a candle to them, nor can Whitney for that matter.

So we're now defining "none of you" as "Cottington"?

And it's "LaBelle." Obviously, you've never heard of her, either.

I think it was just a spelling mistake.

Have they released this as a single yet?

I can hit those high notes if someone squeezes my balls hard enough. Does that make me the best singer ever?

I'm confused as to what the point of this thread is and what the original poster is hoping to achieve.

I'd also like some definitive stats and where they come from. If you're going specifically by stats, there are ways of measuring these things and I'm assuming they're referring to Billboard charts. My question is WHICH charts. Just because she's topped some doesn't mean much. Hell, Madonna was/is the biggest selling female artist of all time and I don't believe Miss Carey has eclipsed that.

Oh...and btw...i'll start the countdown until someone posts the "this thread is really gay" picture here.

Best ever not by a mile in my eyes Billie Hoilday (LADY DAY) is greatest of all-time.

Carey has good range on her voice and so does Aguillera(sp?) If either one was aksed to sing acapella in an "on the fly" situation I'm sure they could do it. However I doubt either Madonna and Spears could do the same.

Ok, fair enough.

But from a "guy" point of view I'd rather see Carey shakin' her booty on stage than Madonna. The latest Madonna v.7.2.1 has more or less morphed into a really good drag queen. There's very little "Female" left. Earlier versions of Madonna were sexier.
