The Principles of Lust (Uk)...A-Fight-club-wanna-be?!!

I just came back from viewing The Principles of Lust, a film that apparently was screened during the Philadelphia Film Festival in 2004, after a colleague of mine invited me to see it. My comments for him aside, this film pushes the envelope quite a bit in terms of violence (quite realistic indeed). I don't know much about the R2-UK disc...I was shown a New Zealand disc, I believe-R4. But looking at the price that Amazon.UK has, less than 10.00 pounds, if you are looking for a bit of Trainspotting intensity mixed with Fight Club-esque wanna-be shooting...give this film a try.

I am sorry I can not comment on the R2 disc but the NZ we saw tonight looked decent (for a full and accurate review I will have to run it through my system in a few days).

Here's an extremely negative review (which I don't share but it is good to have a different point of view for the readers):
http://www.tiscali.co.uk/entertainme...s_of_lust.html

And a more favorable one:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/films/2004/03/0...4_review.shtml

Warning!:There is some serious head-bashing, and very, very explicit sex scenes (the club scene in particular was rather shocking in my opinion, lots of hard drugs).

sounds interesting, thanks for the heads up! Sounds like it'd be safe to say that the UK release is censored/cut... maybe I'll add it onto my Phantasm box set order, but that won't get to me until sometime in November.

You've got mail!

Now, I looked around but I did not find any info on the UK disc (it is marked as being 18-a rather harsh rating, so perhaps the disc is not cut), I don't think anyone bothered reviewing it. Here's the R4 disc:

...but I don't think that the specs are correct. The version we saw last night was 16/9 and as far as I am concerned was pretty graphic (uncut?...I don't know where and how to compare it), the kids bashing each other were explicit enough. Perhaps someone that has seen this film in Philadelphia and has the DVD can comment on it further. As I said though this is a very pushy British crime/druggie film.

I have the Australian release and it is indeed anamorphic. It is also actually region-free but only comes with a 2.0 soundtrack.

*yawns* Is that it? What? No satire? No wry comments on commercialism or inter-personal relationships? BAH!

Not sure how to take your comment but I think that this film is doomed to spur extreme emotions. If you look for a serious interpretation of its message(s)- it is as harsh and provocative as...well, quite frankly there is no other recent British film I can compare it to (think of Layer Cake as a Michael Bay film...too sleek). If you want to join the camp of potential critics...then I believe that you could easily dismiss it as modern mindless exploitation. Hope this makes sense.

Since it is a UK - not a New Zealand - film, wouldn't it be safe to assume the UK disc is uncut (same as the New Zealand disc)? I know UK discs are at times subject to more cutting than others, but I'm assuming they would leave alone one of their own, or is that not always the case?

Flixtime:

You have a very good point but I don't think I have an answer for you. After performing some research it seems like the film got some very extreme reviews from the critics and quite frankly I don't know whether or not it was censored for the domestic DVD release. On the other hand I will have the Aussie disc/NZ tomorrow night so I could test it on my equipment. As I mentioned above video quality was not bad...but I have to see what it looks like on a big screen.

In the meantime...I have not been able to find any UK R2 reviews. I also wanted to find out whether or not the NZ/AU-UK discs are identical.
