Yes, I know... I should get satellite radio.

Let me start by saying that Austin radio absolutely sucks... 90% of it is either country, oldies, Spanish language, or bad hip hop. The remaining 10% seems to be in commercial 80% of the time.

I usually do talk/sports radio, as it seems to absorb me pretty easily, and outside the longer commercial breaks near the top and bottom of each hour, I can usually find something interesting at all times. But while my car's in the shop, I have a rental that's actually quite upscale compared to the car I usually drive. So I thought I'd try music for a change the other day on the way to work.

My experience to Mr. Dogg's work is mostly limited to stuff that I've seen on TV (shows, not eMpTyV, or whatever), like his guest appearance on Las Vegas.

While scanning for music in the car, I caught the song he did on that show, the one about "something-while-it's-hot", that all the dorky white folks on staff at the Montecito were bopping to at the end of the show. I kinda like the beat ("and it's easy to dance to", sorry old white-folk reference) and I kinda crank it up.

And I thought... God, what would it look like to see me bopping at the red light to Snoop in my "pimp" ride (Infinity G35, which is much more bling than my stock Civic) and I turned it back down. (Yes, I know, using the terms "pimp ride" and "bling" instantly disqualifies me from the ability to listen to Snoop)

More a rant than anything, but thought that folks might enjoy the story and/or have similar experience.

Apparently Snoop D-O-Double-G is right there with the middle-aged (and much older) white guy demographic since he's on my TV every twenty minutes trying to sell me a Chrysler. You just feel embarrassed for him every time you watch it. It's just bizarre to me - here's a guy who has centered entire tours around the theme of pot, he's been the host of porno flicks, and now he's selling Chryslers with Lee Iacocca. Strange.

I wasn't listening to Snoop then.





But I do have a question:

If I'm driving down the road, jamming to the mashup of Snoop's "Drop it like it's hot" and Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love", am I "edgy and cool"? Or did I magically find a way to look dorky to both hip hop and classic rock fans at the same time, while still alienating myself from the folks who don't like either genre?

Instead of listening to a country version of the song you should just listen to two radios at once one playing some Tim Mcgraw song and another playing some snoop. Then maybe you just invented a whole new form of entertainment, if you market this correctly sometime in the near future all cars will come standard equipped with dual stereos and there will be entire forums based on what songs go best together......then it will become like wheels on an escalade right after you buy your first set of dubs somebody will get dubble dubs and you'll have to get trizzle dubz meaning someday people will be writing songs about listening to like 10 songs at the same time while smacking their bitches and drinkin some pimp juice with sweat on their balls that will ineveitably be mixed with god knows how many others, until we see kids dancing to the sound of pink noise. It'll be awesome

Snoop speaks for Chrysler?

NOT that you need any more proof that your world has gone nuts, but let’s slip into this little hypothetical number, just to see if it fits:

A young man enters a Chrysler employment center in search of an entry-level position — on the assembly line, in the administrative offices, in a showroom or service center. Whatever.

When asked by the personnel officer, to describe himself, the young man calmly speaks the following:

“I regard women as second-class humans who exist only to satisfy my sexual urges, after which I discard them. In fact, I rarely refer to women as women; I openly call them whores, bitches and worse. And, yes, I have publicly advocated that bitches who don’t do as I say risk a beating.

“I also publicly and reflexively refer to African-Americans as ******s. I can barely utter a sentence in public without calling someone a ******. But my hateful side is not limited to any single group. I’ve openly mocked homosexuals and I’ve publicly advocated violence against police.

“And that reminds me: many of my closest friends and associates — those not yet shot dead by police or by one another — are criminals who are either in prison for drug felonies and/or crimes of violence.

“Violence, by the way, has a way of following me, everywhere I go. In fact, given the number of drive-by shootings I’m intimately familiar with, the automotive industry holds for me a special appeal.

“I should also add that I’ve also produced and appeared in pornographic videos. Oh, and when I know that a lot of people are watching me, I grab my crotch.

“Do you have anything for me? I sure would like to work for Chrysler.”

“When can you start?” the Chrysler rep responds.

Fat chance. That young man wouldn’t be hired by Chrysler to inflate a flat tire.

And yet, just such a man has become Chrysler’s new and highly paid featured spokesperson in a series of TV commercials now running across the USA. Yep,
Snoop Dogg, among the godfathers of gangsta rap and one of the leading purveyors and profiteers of the gang culture that so deeply afflicts this country, was chosen to star in Chrysler commercials, alongside retired Chrysler chairman
Lee Iacocca.

“He’s just a good kid,” Iacocca, after taping the commercials, told USA Today. “I don’t understand half the things he was telling me, but it was fun.”

Is that right? Well, then, if Iacocca didn’t understand what his co-star was saying, he can summon, from the Internet, the lyrics from Snoop’s recordings. And perhaps, Mr. Iacocca, in his next TV commercial for Chrysler, will read from those lyrics. Perhaps members of Chrysler’s board of directors, at their next shareholders’ meeting, will pass out lyric sheets so they can all sing along.

Meanwhile, with Snoop Dogg chosen as a front-and-center Chrysler spokesperson, how can Chrysler discipline, let alone terminate, any employee who is guilty of breaching the company’s code of social conduct?

Same goes for the T-Mobile cell phone company, which had beaten Chrysler to the pandering punch in choosing Snoop Dogg to star in its commercials. Good grief.
